CULTURAL ARTWORK INCREASE AESTHETIC APPEAL OF YOGYAKARTA AIRPORT

STATE-owned airport management company PT Angkasa Pura I has beautified the Yogyakarta International Airport, located in Kulon Progo District, with several ornaments and artworks emblematic of the local culture.

According to Director of PT Angkasa Pura I, Faik Fahmi, stated that during the development process of the international airport, his office had specifically focused on highlighting the element of local wisdom, represented through various artworks depicted across various areas in the terminals.

“Apart from the attempt to beautify the airport, the various artworks also give credit to local cultural values and village residents, whose area is being used for the airport,” he explained.

Some 15 artworks bedecked the airport at several spots, five of which were named after the villages — Sindutan, Palihan, Kebonrejo, Jangkaran, and Glagah, that had allotted their areas for the airport.

The rest of the 10 artworks comprise the Hamemayu Hayuningrat statue at the gate area of the airport, Bedaya Kinjeng Wesi statue at the departure terminal, ”Jogja on the Move” pop-up relief, Among Bocah statue at the terminal area, as well as the Tetanduran statue wrapped around the terminal’s pillars, among others.

“It is still in the process of completion. The artworks will make the Yogyakarta International Airport appear magnificent with its local wisdom,” he noted.

He also mentioned that the airport development process is targeted to be fully completed in March 2020. The airport will be fully operational on March 29. All flights from the Adisutjipto Airport will be relocated to Kulon Progo, with the exception of scheduled and non-scheduled flights using propellers and VIP and general aviation flights. [antaranews]
