SHARING INDONESIA’S COVID-19 MITIGATION EXPERIENCE AT THE UNWTO FORUM

THE Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy shares experiences and steps of the Indonesian government in mitigating the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the tourism sector and creative economy in the UNWTO Commission for East Asia & The Pacific UNWTO Commission for South Asia (CAP-CSA) forum Thirty-Second Joint Meeting (Virtual) which took place on Tuesday (6/30).

According to the Director of Inter-Institutional Relations of the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy, K. Candra Negara as the head of the delegation said, the 32nd UNWTO Regional Commission meeting which was held virtually discussed various efforts in mitigating the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in the Asia Pacific and South Asia regions. Including rebuilding consumer confidence through the Innovation, Investments and Digital Transformation strategies presented by UNWTO.

“This meeting is the first UNWTO regional forum that must be held virtually after the physical meeting activities in Sri Lanka were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic,” K. Candra Negara said in a statement.

On that occasion Candra said, the Ministry of Tourism conveyed the Indonesian government’s steps in mitigation based on three major directives of President Joko Widodo. Namely social protection programs for tourism workers, budget reallocation for labor-intensive programs or activities, as well as economic stimulus for businesses in the tourism sector and the creative economy. The Ministry of Tourism then translated the three directives into various programs.

Among them are temporary direct assistance for tourism sector workers directly affected by the pandemic, training to improve competence in the field of tourism, and forging cooperation with hotel and transportation entrepreneurs to provide accommodation facilities for health workers serving in several government referral hospitals in handling COVID-19 .

“The Ministry of Tourism is also preparing a guidebook for businesses in the tourism sector and the creative economy, as a more detailed derivative of the health protocol that has been issued by the Ministry of Health based on input from the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy sector,” Candra said.

The guide covers the arrangement of hotels, restaurants, tourist destinations, homestays, to tour operators who are also expected to get support from UNWTO in completing the reference. [traveltext.id]
