20 BEST COUNTRIES FOR TRAVELLING IN THE 2020 READERS CHOICE AWARDS

IS THE Readers Choice Awards 2020 selects the 20 best countries in the world for travel. Perennial favorites like Italy and Japan remain steadfastly on the list, but there are also some newcomers like mountainous Bhutan, far from everything and Jamaican paradise.

Here are the choices of the best countries in the world 2020 for traveling based on the results of readers choice awards as reported by CN Travelers, one of the luxurious magazines in the US:

Rank 20: India
India is a country that has a lot to offer. From the busy streets of Mumbai, to the peaks of the Himalayas and the pristine coast of the Indian Ocean, the geography here can be described as stunning. Obviously the popular circuits of Rajasthan, Goa and Mumbai to the west are must-see spots.

But make sure you set aside time for something a little wilder, a little more secluded diving into the incredibly remote Andaman Islands, glamping at 14,000 feet at Shakhti Laddakh, or a tiger safari in Bandhavgarh National Park will be a delight.

Rank 19: New Zealand
A perennial favorite, New Zealand is whatever you want it to be. Looking for adventure? Launch yourself 500 feet across the valley from the Nevis Catapult, a device invented by the creators of bungee-jumping. Or you can, take a walk through the country’s expanses of green fields, high mountains and beautiful beaches. Being outdoors is a way of life in this island nation, which also happens to be the backdrop for Middle-earth in Lord of the Rings.

The North or South Island offers a very beautiful view. Take long journeys, either by traveling overland from top to bottom through valleys and vineyards. Get out of your car to sip on the wines of this country famous for its Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc or take a stroll through comfortable Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch. In this laid-back country, there are no wrong choices.

Rank 18: Turkey
Despite State Department warnings to be careful when traveling to parts of Turkey over the past few years, the country remains a top destination for global travelers. Istanbul, for example, will never go out of style, especially in districts like Karaköy, where a thriving art scene attracts students and bohemians with new galleries and museums.

In fact, Istanbul’s sparkling New Airport is a literal destination in itself, thanks in part to the large duty-free shopping zone, already filled with 1,000 luxury brands such as Gucci, Celine and Prada. As well as they offer food and historical tours, there are also the country’s Turquoise beaches which provide the kind of extraordinary beauty that makes Turkey a complete destination.

Rank 17: Israel
A complex political hotbed, thousands of years of history, awe-inspiring sight: Israel tends to be chaotic as well as fun. From cities like Jerusalem to Tel Aviv, modern politics is never far from people’s minds, but the influx of modern services, hotels and restaurants is changing the conversation. The government continues to encourage development, the point is marketing that the country is open for business.

In Jerusalem you’ll find some of the most sacred sites in the world, such as the Wailing Wall, but off the pilgrimage you will also see the flow of modern life amid booming luxury hotels. Otherwise, visiting this country at the crossroads of religion and culture will always be memorable.

Rank 16: Colombia
Beautiful coastlines, sky-high Andes peaks, jewel-colored Amazon forests, a former colonial metropolis and ancient ruins: It’s all here. The diversity of landscapes and natural experiences alone is enough to lure travelers to visit, but by visiting energetic and sophisticated cities like Bogotá and Cartagena you will have the makings of a true destination.

Lastly, you’ll find colorful and beautifully preserved colonial streets, Caribbean beaches, and some of the best food this country has to offer arepas, aguardiente, you name it. Ecotourism, meanwhile, has helped the country recover from years of violence, attracting young backpackers to the countryside to explore forests and hike mountain trails.

Rank 15: Malaysia
There is much to unravel here: fabulous street food in Kuala Lampur; many ancient Hindu and Buddhist temples; unspoiled nature in the Langkawi archipelago; and a national park system covering everything from endangered tiger species to the largest known limestone cave chamber in the world.

Each spot presents a feast for the senses in Malaysia, whether it’s the sight of local women selling produce at the Siti Khadijah Market, or the neon coral reefs of Perhentian Islands. It will be endless exploration and very rewarding in terms of food, religion, history, culture and adventure making the trip worth the distance.

Rank 14: Peru
While over tourism threatens iconic sites like Machu Picchu, the city of Cuzco and the Sacred Valley to such an extent that the government has mandated restrictions on visitors this country has much to offer adventurous travelers, if you know where to look.

Start in the capital city of Lima, where you’ll find great international dining, local markets, traditional craftsmen and charming hotels. Or head 350 miles northwest to the sleepy coastal town of Huanchaco, which has an ancient history of surfing it is believed that since at least 1,500 BC, locals have boarded the caballitos de totora, possibly the world’s first surfboard.

Rank 13: Jamaica
An island as rich in culture and history as Jamaica invites exploration not only for one trip, but for many people and with so many easy direct flights from the east coast, it is possible to return again and again. It’s a pick-your-own adventure from a Caribbean destination, whether your style is more than a complete set-it-and-forget-it resort on the beach, a boutique eco lodge in the mountains, or a little bit of both.

Make sure to absorb the local culture as this is the birthplace of Rastafarianism, reggae. Additionally, the island has the highest daily temperatures in the Caribbean, so whether you visit in high or low season, the sun is sure to shine and the water is warm.

Rank 12: Bhutan
“GNH” are the three letters you should know when traveling to Bhutan. The “Gross National Happiness” Index, however, is how a government measures its own progress, using non-materialistic Buddhist principles such as sustainable and equitable socio-economic development and environmental preservation. GNH is the theory behind the unique visa program that Bhutan uses to curb over tourism.

You will experience a better tour than in Europe, without the crowds. After all, part of what makes this pretty little country so special is how serene and untouched the landscape is.

Rank 11: Ireland
If there is one positive cliché about Ireland, it’s that it’s the land of some of the friendliest people you’ll meet. Of course, it’s exquisite, to boot: From postcard-perfect Kerry and Cork to the dramatic Causeway Coast, to the imposing Skellig Michael, it’s as if Ireland doesn’t have a bad point of view. Flights via Aer Lingus to green land are affordable and plentiful, and a balance between imagination and modern luxury (hotels, restaurants and culture).

The home of Joyce, Shaw, and Beckett, Dublin has also grown into a technology hub for the likes of Google, Facebook and Airbnb, a boon for local businesses and a drive for a more globalized culture. Nearby Belfast (an hour and a half north from Dublin by car) may be part of Northern Ireland, but it is also, a draw in its own right.

Rank 10: Mexico
Mexico has long been the first destination for many Americans who wish to travel. Consider Mexico City, the jewel of the sprawling capital. If you plan on coming just for a meal whether it’s a simple but great pastor street taco or a stunning meal at Pujol you’re guaranteed a great trip.

Here, the European past (think 18th century Spanish and French mansions) is juxtaposed with native markets and local craftsmen, supported by a growing number of tourists and expats. Elsewhere, Oaxaca continues to attract fans of its original spirit, mezcal, while travelers are increasingly interested in designing the cities of both Puebla and Guadalajara.

Rank 9: Vietnam
Vietnam is a country full of energy and many well-traveled roads. While bustling metropolitan cities like Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and Hoi An are known for their street food, markets and vibrant cultural offerings. Move away from the city center and you will find peaceful natural surroundings and sacred temples. The country has long been known as a bulwark for intrepid backpackers, but that is changing rapidly.

For starters, the more than 2,000 miles of coastline has some of the best beaches in the world, while the countryside with rice fields and rolling hills provides tranquility away from the city. Here, you’ll also find architectural wonders – ancient imperial shrines, forts and tombs, a stark contrast to the bustle of the rocking metropolis of Hanoi. The dichotomy is energetic and striking.

Rank 8: South Africa
Located on the tip of Africa, South Africa is one of the continent’s most dynamic nations, a land of wild safaris, great wine and stunning beaches. Cities like Cape Town and Johannesburg attract large numbers of internationals to this corner of the world, and once you’re here, there’s a lot to explore.

For a taste of party life with a touch of sea spray, head to Cape Town’s famous party beach, Camps Bay, where you’ll find the bustling promenade of hotels, bars and restaurants against the backdrop of the stunning Twelve Apostles mountain range, or escape. yourself to the quieter Winelands, tour vineyards and wineries in world famous regions such as Franschhoek, known for its Méthode Cap Classique sparkling wines, which showcase South Africa’s rising prominence in the world of wine.

Rank 7: Thailand
A long-time destination for travelers and backpackers alike, Thailand’s combination of bustling metro, unforgettable street food culture and happy historical sites attracts tourists from all walks of life. Thailand can be described with one word: Energetic. From famous international gatherings such as Songkran, the five-day New Year’s celebrations, to countless photogenic lantern festivals, tourists can experience Thai customs and traditions first-hand.

The adventurous type can explore the island to a bunch of jungle-covered spots off the coast perfect for day trips but if you’re looking for creature comfort, city centers like Bangkok and Chiang Mai offer plenty of cultural immersion. Lastly, you can’t go to Thailand without visiting the country’s spirit-elevating sacred sites, such as Wat Pho, where you will not only find the country’s largest Buddha, a 150-foot-tall golden statue of serenity, but also a famous massage school, open to walk-ins and appointments.

Rank 6: Indonesia
Indonesia is fast becoming a new tourist destination for nomads. People love modern resorts, secluded beaches and stunning temples. The trio of semi-secluded Gili islands is inviting with quiet, sun-drenched beaches – alongside spas and holiday homes.

Bali continues to attract aspiring yogis and partygoers, with healers and spa retreats peacefully coexisting with popular beach clubs. Why does Indonesia score so high among our readers. We felt that a mixture of ancient temples, world famous surfing and inviting spirituality had something to do with it.

Rank 5: Greece
In recent years, Greece has recovered from a financial or political crisis, but the country is bouncing back. This is most clearly seen in the capital city of Athens, the birthplace of western civilization, and the cradle of ancient literature and philosophy where the Renzo Piano-designed Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center houses the National Opera and National Library, along with everything from free yoga classes to football matches in the square and its magnificent gardens.

Although the city’s buildings date back to 400 BC, the contemporary and trendy restaurants, bars and hotels are again attracting more tourists. Greece, of course, is also famous for its islands, namely IRL Santorini and Mykonos, but if you want to avoid moon-eyed newlyweds or delirious club kids, head to seemingly untouched Milos and Patmos. Leave it to the locals to point you in the right direction.

Rank 4: Japan
Many people think Tokyo is the best city in the world, and frankly, it’s hard to argue with? The mega-metropolis has everything you could ask for sophisticated urban living, the perfect place to eat (even from vending machines), and a dizzying array of cultures, from fashion to music.

But Japan is not limited to Tokyo. From relaxing rustic onsen to country towns hiding extraordinary architecture, Japan is a great gift worth giving away. The legendary efficiency of Japan’s rail travel makes it dream to go around and see the imagined sights of Shinto shrines, museums and of course, the iconic cherry trees. While Japan has long been known for its food and sake, it is also a rising destination for modern cocktails, wines and spirits such as gin and whiskey. Is there anything the Japanese don’t do?

Rank 3: Portugal
With increased flights to the capital city of Lisbon, the vibrant creative scene in trendy Porto, great wines throughout the Douro Valley, and the green islands of Portugal’s Azores have taken hold. Admire historic tile work, known as azulejos, in beautiful Lisbon while you are looking for a cafe or lounge that features a live fado show, the country’s signature style of music.

Alentejo’s vineyard views rival those in Italy or France and its wines made with strong native wines such as Touriga Nacional and Aragonez are an attraction in itself, but paired with a chic boutique hotel housed in restored 19th-century buildings and impeccable regional cuisine , You may never want to leave.

Rank 2: Sri Lanka
When terrorists attacked Sri Lanka in early 2019, the island nation’s hard-earned reputation as a scenic escape took a hit, especially affecting locals working in the tourism trade. In the months since, the country has attempted to once again attract tourists by offering tourists free travel visas and slowly, they will return.

With countless sacred sites, boundless crystal blue waters and picturesque jade green tea plantations, Sri Lanka offers a lot of charm to those wishing to explore. The axiom “big things come in small packages” certainly applies here: The island nation is steeped in post- and pre-colonial history in the capital Colombo, and eight UNESCO World Heritage sites. In recent years, the hotel boom has led to the opening of upscale fitness resorts and spas, all of which keep you within reach of your dream vacation.

Rank 1: Italy
What do you think of the perennial favorite Italy, the country that brought quarantine balcony chants in the early days of COVID? Even after everything we’ve been through in 2020, the Eternal City of Rome from its iconic Coliseum to its incredible restaurants is going nowhere, and its art capital, Venice, is still with us.

Florence, be it a modern, quaint eatery or a trendy bar serving everything from natural wines to fine cocktails. Even the famous sparkling wine region, Prosecco, is in the limelight, as the area’s steep, green vineyards were recently recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site. [business.com/photo special]
