FOREIGN TOURIST VISITS STILL DROP, THE MAIN MARKET IS STILL IN LOCKDOWN

THE Central Statistics Agency (BPS) conveyed that the main market for foreign tourists coming to Indonesia is still imposing lockdowns, which makes the national tourism sector not yet recovering from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to the Head of the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) Suhariyanto said foreign tourist visits were still experiencing a decline, because this pandemic had a tremendous impact on the tourism sector and its various supporting sectors. Several countries which are the main markets for Indonesian tourists still impose lockdowns.

“The countries of origin which are the main market for foreign tourists for Indonesia include Malaysia, China, Singapore and Australia. In January 2021, the number of foreign tourists who came to Indonesia was 141,300 people, where this figure was down 14.90% compared to December 2020 and fell sharply to 89.05% compared to January 2020 or before the pandemic hit the country,” he said.

He explained, as for the number of foreign tourists according to the entrance, namely 68% of foreign tourists coming by land, 44.2% of foreign tourists by sea, and only 1.7% to Indonesia by airplane. We can understand that in various airports in Indonesia, such as Soekarno-Hatta, Sam Ratulangi, and Juanda, the number of foreign tourists who came has decreased sharply compared to the previous month and the previous year.

“According to nationality, the majority of foreign tourists who came to Indonesia during this pandemic were those from Timor Leste. In January 2021 the arrival of foreign tourists from Timor Leste reached 54.2%. This figure continues to increase when compared to December 2020, which contributed 49.4%,” he concluded.
