TRUNYAN VILLAGE, A BALINESE VILLAGE FOR ITS UNIQUE FUNERAL TRADITIONS

TRUNYAN Village is located in Kintamani District, Bangli Regency, Bali, known for its unique funeral tradition among local and foreign tourists. Trunyan Village is known to have a unique funeral tradition compared to other villages on the island of Bali.

The uniqueness of Trunyan Village is the tradition of placing the corpse just like that in the burial area without being buried or cradled first. There you will see the bodies that are lined up neatly, the bones that are lined up, the spread of money, to the items that will be left with the corpse.

Surprisingly, the burial area had no corpse or other unpleasant smell. According to local stories, one of the reasons is because in the middle of the cemetery a Taru Menyan tree grows which is quite large and has a distinctive aroma that can eliminate all unpleasant smells in the area.

Before being buried, the procession is cleaned with rainwater and wrapped in a cloth, but the head is not covered. After that the body will be laid in a bamboo cage to avoid wild animals. When all the cages are full, the oldest body will be removed to make room for the new corpse by placing it on the pile.

When the corpse’s body has been crushed by the heat of the sun, the bones will be placed on an altar under the sacred tree. In Trunyan Village, not all of the bodies are made into one burial area.

There are three separate burial places, namely, Seme Faces which are intended for those who died naturally, Seme Denies for those who died unnaturally or as a result of accidents and Seme Muda for babies, small children, and those who are not married.

Uniquely in Trunyan Village, you will not find women from Trunyan Village visiting the cemetery. They believed that the village would be hit by an earthquake or a volcanic eruption if women came to the funeral.

Likewise, when carrying out a funeral procession, only men are allowed to deliver the bodies from preparation to the funeral, all carried out by men. After the funeral, the men also have to carry out a self-cleaning process, only then are they allowed to enter Pancering Temple.

Trunyan Village cannot be easily reached for local and foreign tourists. The way to Trunyan Village is by taking a boat across Lake Batur to Trunyan. The distance for the crossing itself is 45 minutes. [photo special]
