THE CHINESE GOVERNMENT ISSUED A TRAVEL ADVISORY TO CANADA

CHINESE citizens must be careful in the near future to go to Canada because the police often act brutally and protest leading to violence in the country, according to the Chinese Embassy in Canada in its official WeChat, Monday (6/7).

The travel advisory issued by China was announced a few days after Canada issued a policy to respond to the National Security Act in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region which was passed by Beijing last week.

The policy is that Canada reminds its citizens not to travel to Hong Kong in the latest travel advisory and suspend exports to Hong Kong. Even experts in China who observed the situation saw the reciprocal travel advisory as an illustration of the deteriorating relations between China and Canada.

The Director of the Faculty of Tourism Development at Beijing Union University, Zhang Lingyun, said that the warning issued by the Chinese diplomatic authorities was based on careful consideration of the current situation in Canada.

“The warning issued when the pandemic situation in Canada and globally continues to deteriorate is more directed to political statements rather than the profit and loss factors of the tourism sector,” Zhang was quoted as saying by the Global Times recently.

“Because the fact is that access to global tourism is still closed amid a pandemic, this new warning is preferred for Chinese citizens who want to travel to Canada for commercial, study and other purposes,” said Xu, the tourism industry player.

Although the short-term impact on the tourism sector is very small, observers warn of a long-term impact on the tourism and education industry for Canada worth billions of US dollars over the ongoing China-Canadian feud since the arrest of Huawei Finance Director Meng Wanzhou by authorities in Canada in December 1, 2018.

“After the global COVID-19 epidemic, most Chinese tourists would prefer to travel domestically rather than abroad,” Zhang added. Since hundreds of years ago, China-Canada has a very close relationship. In the 1800s, there was a massive exodus of Chinese citizens, especially those living in the southern regions, such as Guangdong Province and Fujian Province, to Canada. [antaranews/photo special
