People of Raja Ampat Learn About Tourism in Yogyakarta

A NUMBER of people from Raja Ampat Sub-District, West Papua, have visited Yogyakarta to improve their knowledge on good practices in tourism.

According to Head of Raja Ampat Tourism Office, Yusdi Lamatenggo, said in Waisai our office has sent a number of people from villages with the geopark tourism potential to the Special Region of Yogyakarta to learn on how they can develop community-based tourism.

He revealed that they were taken to geopark tourism destinations as well as a number of landscape climbing tours and shown how the tourism community in Yogyakarta manage their destinations.

The destinations they visited included the Sewu Mountain, Gunungkidul Tanding Cave, Batu Purba, Merapi Mountain, and the Borobudur Temple.

The study trip, he continued, aims to paint a picture for the participating people of Raja Ampat on how they can manage the tourism potentials in their respective villages.

For example, the Sub-district of Gunung Kidul in Yogyakarta is known as a tourism destination, despite also being known for being a barren area with difficultly in access to water.

“This is what they need to learn, considering that Raja Ampat is home to extraordinary tourism destinations,” he added.

He hoped that the study trip could inspire the participants to develop the local tourism sector further and ultimately increase economic activities. [antaranews]
