BPS: DECEMBER 2020 FOREIGN TOURIST VISITS WERE MOSTLY FOR BUSINESS

THE Indonesia’s Central Statistics Agency (BPS) said that foreign tourist arrivals in December 2020 reached 164,000 people, most of whom were still tourists who would take care of certain business, duties and missions, and not for travel.

According to the Head of BPS Suhariyanto when holding a press conference virtually, the number of tourists arriving in December 2020 increased by 13.58% when compared to the previous month, there was a slight movement. However, when compared to 2019, there was a very steep decline, namely 88.08%.

Suhariyanto gave an example, there were 127 foreign tourists who came to Bali in December 2020, where they came to attend the conference, and some of them were guests from international organizations.

“If viewed according to the entrance, 59% of foreign tourists come by road, 27% by sea, and 14 percent by air. At all airports there is a sharp decline if we compare it to last year’s position. Likewise foreign tourists who travel by sea and land,” he said.

According to him, the pandemic has had a devastating impact on the tourism sector and its supporting sectors. This does not only happen in Indonesia but also in various countries, which is not an easy challenge.

“Because many countries which are the main market for Indonesian tourists, still impose travel restrictions or travel bans abroad. In fact, several countries that experienced the second wave of the pandemic have returned to lockdown,” Suhariyanto concluded. [antaranews]
