PT GARUDA Indonesia Tbk. still able to reap profits from its 3 international routes, namely Bangkok, Hong Kong, and China in the midst of plans to close international routes that make losses.
According to the President Director of Garuda Indonesia, Irfan Setiaputra said I see that there are still international routes that generate significant revenue for Garuda Indonesia. These routes are profitable due to the high demand for rental or charter services.
“The fortunate thing is [the route] is Bangkok, Hong Kong, China. Especially because China has a lot of charters/rentals. So, regarding these international routes, we will indeed stop because of losses. It’s just that there are several routes that we are still maintaining even though they are currently losing but there is potential for profit,” he said, Monday (6/21).
The national airline also explained its future plans to focus on international cargo routes. Mainly, after seeing that the movement of international cargo in 2021 has increased tremendously compared to the average achievement before the COVID-19 pandemic.
“This international cargo has gone up a lot. From 8.3 million tons to around 20 million tons. That’s an international majority and we will defend it. So, our base is cargo and for passengers, it is carried out,” he noted.
As part of the evaluation of the performance of international routes, the issuer coded GIAA has decided that the international routes, namely Melbourne and Perth, will be closed starting next month. Previously, this full-service airline had closed routes to and from Osaka, Japan. Meanwhile, one flight to the Australian continent that is still maintained by Garuda Indonesia is Sydney.
He explained that the route to Sydney remained open even though the frequency was reduced to once a week to maintain at least connectivity. Moreover, at this time, Australia has tightened the movement of people to enter the country.
In fact, Irfan previously mentioned that the green continent authority only allowed a maximum of 50 people to enter his country. On the other hand, there are no restrictions for flights out of Australia.
“So yesterday there were many Indonesian citizens, 100 passenger flights returned to Indonesia. Due to tightening, we only open Sydney once a week. It is important that there is connectivity,” he concluded. [bisnis.com/photo special]
