SYDNEY will enter a total lockdown for two weeks starting this Saturday (6/26). Authorities are trying to contain the fast-spreading outbreak of the Corona Delta virus variant with lockdown measures.
The variant is highly contagious in several cities in Australia. Reporting from CNN, Saturday (6/26), more than one million people in downtown Sydney and the city’s eastern suburbs have gone into lockdown due to the COVID-19 outbreak.
However, health authorities say they need to expand that once more COVID-19 cases are recorded. With exposure figures steadily increasing outside the area, it was the country’s initial concern.
Not only Sydney, the Prime Minister of the state of New South Wales Gladys Berejiklian also announced that he would lock down the Blue Mountains, Central Coast and Wollongong areas that surround Sydney.
The lockdown measures are the latest in a series of brief but harsh lockdowns that have been imposed on Australian cities. That means the Sydney lockdown is the biggest step in recent months to combat the COVID-19 outbreak in Australia. [antaranews/photo special]
