THE GAME industry in Indonesia has the potential to continue to be developed because many have talents in producing games on an international scale.
According to the Chairman of the Indonesian Game Association (AGI), Cipto Adiguno in a virtual National Coordination Meeting (Rakornas) of the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy, Jakarta, Tuesday (9/28) said Indonesia is one of the countries with the fastest growing games industry in the world. Currently, its growth has doubled and has even become a country ranked 16th in the largest games market in the world.
“The government has supported the game industry a lot through a push strategy, namely a strategy to grow talent and grow capabilities to be able to make quality products,” he said.
Cipto Adiguno explained, currently with the talents we have, we can easily export our content to all over the world. To develop the game industry in Indonesia, a pull strategy is needed, namely a strategy aimed at, among others, creating a large company that controls the games industry in the country. This creates a trickle-down effect, including increased employment and talent quality development.
“Indonesians spend IDR 25 trillion-IDR30 trillion every year on the game industry. In 2020, an increase of 32% is expected. Some of the reasons for the fast growth of the game include better internet penetration, cheap mobile phone prices, and games being easy-to-obtain entertainment,” he remarked.
Thanks to government support, he continued, the Indonesian game industry experienced rapid growth in the Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) or an average annual growth rate of 51% from 2018-2019. In 2020, it is estimated to generate US$8.64 million but only 0.49% of market share.
“Until 2025, we will still be a market (because the percentage is still small). Most of the Indonesian game industry’s money went abroad or 99.5% of the Rp25 trillion earned went abroad. Compare the game industry in Indonesia with a number of countries that also have fairly high game growth,” he pointed out.
He added, in Poland, 3 of the 13 largest companies are game companies with a level that is considered the size of a bank or oil company. In addition, 96% of industry income comes from exports and generates 9,700 jobs. That’s just the production, not including the marketing, management, and others.
“The progress of gaming companies in Poland is judged by the influence of a game unicorn that controls the entire industry so that it can grow steadily. Likewise in South Korea (South Korea), he continued, the country’s game industry generates nearly US$20 billion per year,” he admitted
Cipto concluded that only 2% of the market in South Korea played foreign games and the rest played local games, thus creating 90,000 jobs for the people of the country. [antaranews/photo special]
