A PAIR of shoes used by Michael Jordan during an NBA game has sold for US$1.47 million at auction. This is a record sale of the world’s most expensive sneakers in an auction held by Sotheby’s auction house.
Just so you know, the pair of shoes sold are not Nike Air Jordans. It is known, Jordan wore the shoes that were auctioned during a match held on November 1, 1984, against the Denver Nuggets.
It was one of the earliest NBA games in Jordan’s career to produce sneakers. These shoes are also the forerunner of the launch of his Air Jordan brand in collaboration with Nike.
Citing Reuters, auction broker Sotheby’s announced the news on its official social media accounts. The shoes at the auction were originally given by Jordan to Nuggets ball boy Tommie Tim III Lewis and are expected to sell for between US$1 million and US$1.5 million.
The winning bid was given by collector Nick Fiorella at Sotheby’s Icons of Excellence & Haute Luxury auction in Las Vegas, Sunday (10/24). The previous record holder for the shoe auction was a pair of Air Jordans worn by Michael Jordan during a pre-season show in 1985 which sold for US$615,000. [antaranews/photo special]
