STATE-OWNED Enterprises Minister Erick Thohir revealed that the cooperation between Garuda Indonesia and Emirates airlines will strengthen the focus of Garuda Indonesia’s domestic route services.
Erick Thohir said that through ‘code sharing’ cooperation with Emirates in serving overseas flight routes, Garuda Indonesia still has ‘value’ in the eyes of its customers. This is expected to have a positive impact in supporting Garuda’s new orientation which will focus more on serving domestic routes.
“After all, we can’t stay silent, can we? The business and finding solutions must still be considered. This includes developing a new strategy and focus for Garuda’s domestic flight business,” said Erick in a written statement received in Jakarta, Thursday (11/1).
In the midst of restructuring Garuda Indonesia, the Ministry of State-Owned Enterpreises as the majority shareholder continues to widen perspectives and examine various possible options related to recovery measures. It is intended that the flag carrier of the national airline can focus on business orientation on domestic flight routes.

The agreement in the form of ‘code sharing’ states that Garuda customers can still explore international routes through the Emirates airline.
“Efforts to restructure continue. Negotiations for Garuda’s debts, which amounted to US$7 billion due to the most expensive leasing cost which reached 26% and corruption, are being negotiated with the lessors. However, we are still trying to open up other options, at least, in order to help Garuda recover,” Erick Thohir concluded. [antaranews/photo special]
