According to the Head of the New Zealand Covid-19 Task Force, Chris Hipkins, New Zealand’s borders will be closed for five months, from December 2021 to April 29, 2022. This step was taken due to the outbreak of cases of the Omicron variant of COVID-19 in a number of countries and the Delta variant of the corona virus. which triggered a spike in cases in mid-2021.
“We want to make sure everything is safe and minimize any health risks that may occur in the country,” Hipkins said as quoted by Reuters. As is known, countries in the South Pacific region, including those that are sufficient to the cities in enforcing cross-country travel.
The Australian government, for example, only opened its borders in early December 2021. Even then, not all states in Australia are truly open or allow foreign nationals to enter. The city of Auckland, which is a metropolitan city in New Zealand, has just opened gradually as more people get vaccinated against COVID-19.
New Zealand citizens who have received a full dose of COVID-19 vaccination and hold a residence visa in Australia can travel from January 16, 2022. Meanwhile, New Zealanders who hold a residence visa from other countries can only travel on February 13, 2022.
