GOV’T PUSHES CIRCULAR ECONOMY IMPLEMENTATION IN IKN DEVELOPMENT

THE Nusantara Capital City Authority (IKN) is encouraging the implementation of the circular economy concept in the development of the new capital, an official said.

According to Coordinator of the expert team for IKN transition, Wicaksono Sarosa, said that the capital city planning and development will be based on the principle of sustainable urban development.

“For waste issue, 60% of the waste will be recycled by 2045,” Sarosa informed during an online discussion on the circular state capital, which was accessed from here on Thursday (7/28).

The circular economy principles that will be applied in the capital city would include wastewater management through a 100% treatment system by 2035, he elaborated.

Furthermore, he said that the authority is currently designing a comprehensive road map by integrating plans related to land, infrastructure, social, investment, and the environment.

“Thus, the policy of One Map, One Plan, One Policy can be implemented properly, as mandated by Law Number 3 of 2022 concerning IKN,” he added.

Meanwhile, chairman of the Indonesian Engineers Association (PII), Danis Hidayat Sumadilaga, said the circular economy could be an important instrument for overcoming the challenges of the climate crisis and pollution.

“In the context of IKN, I think the key is sustainability. One of the absolute requirements is a circular economy,” Sumadilaga added.

A circular economy is intended to replace the “take-use-dispose” approach of the linear economy by seeking to extend the life cycle and value of products, raw materials, and resources so that they can be used for as long as possible, while minimizing their social and environmental impacts.

Circular economy implementation in Indonesia can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 9% and save about 3% of water by 2030.  The implementation of a circular economy is expected to help materialize the vision of IKN as a “world-class city for all.” [antaranews/photo special]
