METAVERSE DEVELOPMENT TO POSITIVELY IMPACT NATIONAL ECONOMY: MINISTER

COORDINATING Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto stated that the development of metaverse technology was an opportunity to bring a positive impact on the national economy.

“Optimization of the metaverse technology is a new opportunity to create added value, productivity, and innovation that have an impact on the national economy,” Hartarto stated at the event titled “ITB Metaverse and Metaverse Impact for Indonesia” as quoted in a statement received here, recently.

He later noted that big companies in the world were showing interest to develop metaverse since this virtual interaction had the ability to resemble real life as well as combine aspects of social media, Augmented Reality, and Virtual Reality (AR/VR) online games, and Blockchain.

According to PWC research, the use of AR/VR technology in the metaverse has the economic potential to increase the global gross domestic product (GDP) by US$1.4 trillion and create 23.3 million new jobs by 2030.

With these myriad potentials, the minister said the government has continued to make various efforts to improve metaverse optimization, including by using the AR/VR metaverse technology created by a domestic producer at the G20 3rd Digital Economy Working Group (DEWG) side event last July.

He remarked that the government also presented the Wonderverse Indonesia platform as a medium to promote the five super-priority destinations in Indonesia through attractive packaging as well as preparing a metaverse version of the new capital city design.

According to Hartarto, the acceleration of metaverse technology could help to develop digital economy readiness from infrastructure aspects, competencies of human resources, such as digital literacy and talent, research, innovation, business development, business ecosystem, to investment and funding. However, these efforts required various forms of support from all stakeholders.

“Collaboration between stakeholders, such as the government, academics, practitioners of the business or industry, and associations is also a major requirement in developing the metaverse and digital economy in Indonesia,” he stated.

Hartarto noted that the use of metaverse technology was one of the government’s efforts to develop a digital economy that is projected to increase with each passing year.

It is recorded that in 2021, the value of Indonesia’s digital economy had reached US$70 billion, which was the highest achievement in the ASEAN. This value was forecast to reach US$146 billion in 2025 and would continue to rise to US$330 billion in 2030. [antaranews/photo special]
