THE 20th ANNIVERSARY OF BALI BOMBINGS REMINDS THE WORLD TO BE MORE VIGILANT

INDONESIA’S National Police Chief General, Listyo Sigit Prabowo conveyed that the 20th anniversary of the Bali Bombing tragedy which took place at the Ground Zero Monument, Kuta, Badung, Bali, Wednesday (10/12), was a reminder for Indonesia and the world to be more vigilant against the threat of terrorism.

Therefore, Listyo considers various prevention efforts including monitoring of radicalism to be important because they can prevent the seeds of terrorism from growing in Indonesia.

“We hope that in the future (from this commemoration event, ed.) Indonesia and the world are increasingly aware of threats related to the activities of terror groups, and how we (build) cooperation in carrying out religious moderation, taking preventive efforts so that the understanding that develops into The seeds of terrorism can be prevented as much as possible,” said the National Police Chief after attending the 20th anniversary of the Bali Bombings on Thursday (10/13) early morning.

On the same occasion, Listyo also conveyed that the 20th anniversary of the Bali Bombing tragedy was an opportunity for the world to strengthen cooperation against terrorism. This is because terrorism is a cross-border crime that is a global problem.

In this regard, he conveyed that a number of representatives of foreign countries, including from Australia, Malaysia, Japan, and New Zealand, who attended the commemoration event had shown their commitment to strengthen cooperation against terrorism.

“We all agree that on the 20th anniversary (of the Bali bombing tragedy), we will continue to do collaboration in dealing with terrorist developments,” said Listyo Sigit Prabowo.

The National Police Chief together with the Indonesian Minister of Home Affairs Tito Karnavian and the Head of the Indonesian National Counter-Terrorism Agency (BNPT) Komjen Pol. Boy Rafli Amar attended the 20th anniversary of the Bali Bombing tragedy at the Bali Bombing Memorial/Ground Zero Monument, Kuta, Badung, which took place on Wednesday night.

In the activity, which was prepared by the Special Detachment (Densus) 88 Anti-terror of the National Police, the country’s top officials prayed together with the survivors, families and relatives of the victims of the Bali Bombings. Residents who gathered in front of the Ground Zero Monument since 23.00 WITA, Wednesday, also lit candles as a symbol of peace.

During the same event, the President of the Republic of Indonesia, Joko Widodo, through a video recording broadcast at the location of the event, reaffirmed Indonesia’s commitment to eradicate terrorism.

“I ordered the National Police Chief and the TNI Commander to increase their vigilance. There is no place in our homeland for terrorism,” said Indonesian President Joko Widodo in a video broadcast during the event.

Not only from the President of the Republic of Indonesia, the Prime Minister of Australia for the period 1996–2007 John Howard also gave a statement regarding the 20th anniversary of the Bali Bombing tragedy through a video recording broadcast at the location of the event.

“The terrorists (the Bali bombings) wanted to damage relations between Indonesia and Australia, but they failed because after the incident the police from the two countries worked hand in hand to hunt down the perpetrators, and that won the hearts of Indonesians and Australians,” Howard said.

The Bali bombings that occurred on October 12, 2002 were bomb explosions in three locations, namely at Paddy’s Pub and Sari Club in Legian, Kuta, Badung, then on the sidewalk near the United States Consulate General’s Office in Renon, Denpasar.

The terror act left 202 people dead, consisting of 164 foreign nationals and 38 Indonesian citizens, and 209 people were injured. [antaranews]
