BALI ISLAND IS DECLARED AS THE WORLD’S FIRST ISLAND OF DIGITAL FABRICATION

THE Provincial Government of Bali together with the Fab City Foundation and Meaningful Design Group declared Bali as “Fab Island” or the island of digital fabrication.

The announcement was made in conjunction with the Bali Fab Fest, a global event that brings together creative industry players, including artists and craftspeople, who use technology to create their work and digital fabrication activists at Jimbaran Hub, Jimbaran, Bali, since 12 October 2022 and will take place for ten days until October 22, 2022.

According to Tomas Diez, Executive Director of Fab Foundation and Founding Partner of Meaningful Design Group in a press release on Wednesday (10/19) said Bali is one of the islands in Indonesia with the highest potential for creative industries and tourism. Besides having many talent makers and digital fabrication activists, Bali is also a meeting place for many cultures, sciences, and people from all over the world. This is one of the reasons why we chose Bali as the location for this year’s Fab City event, namely Bali Fab Fest.

Meanwhile Putu Agung Prianta, Steering Committee of Bali Fab Fest and Founding Partner of Meaningful Design Group, said that Bali is the first island in the world to be declared a Fab Island to join the global network.

The Bali Fab Fest was attended by more than 300 digital fabrication and creative industry activists from various countries. They come from a variety of professional backgrounds, including designers, researchers, innovators, as well as artists and crafters.

This activity is part of the Fab City Network movement, a global digital fabrication initiative that has run in 41 cities in the world and has spawned and connected 2,500 fab labs (fabrication laboratories) in various countries to a global network that enables collaboration and knowledge exchange.

Fab City Network’s long-term mission is to provide areas that can meet almost all of their consumption needs locally and independently by 2054.

Meanwhile, the Governor of Bali I Wayan Koster said that the implementation of the Bali Fab Festival 2022 is expected to contribute to the development of Bali, especially in supporting the Bali Smart Island Program as part of the Bali Economic Transformation Program in accordance with the Bali Development Vision, namely “Nangun Sat Kerthi Loka Bali’ through The Universal Development Pattern is Planning Towards a New Era of Bali.

He conveyed that the Fab City concept that encourages the growth and development of a circular economy with the spirit so that the regions can meet their own needs, by producing their own products needed with the support of advanced technology, is very much in line with the vision of ‘Nangun Sat Kerthi Loka Bali’ and one of the principles in Trisakti Bung Karno, namely being economically independent.

By declaring itself as a Fab Island, Bali becomes part of a global network of technology, innovation and entrepreneurship to empower Balinese people to the grassroots.

Wayan Koster added, with Bali becoming a Fab Island, the tourism sector, which currently dominates Bali’s economy, will be developed or empowered with a new type of tourism, namely technology-based tourism or technology tourism. This technology-based tourism will collaborate with local communities to find solutions to the challenges faced through research, development and co-production.

“Bali as a Fab Island will bring Bali’s economy beyond tourism. It will drive the future of Indonesia’s economy and tourism, supporting and providing opportunities for anyone, including local talent, to learn about technology and share knowledge. The Bali Fab Fest is a great start. shows the direction towards the future of the local and national economy,” said Ilham Habibie, Steering Committee of Bali Fab Fest. [antaranews]
