DEDICATED TO THE DEAF, STARBUCKS OPENS ITS FIRST SIGNING OUTLET IN JAKARTA

STARBUCKS Indonesia opened its first Signing Store in Jakarta. This outlet is dedicated to the Deaf, Hearing Impaired, and Sign Language communities on (12/03).

The outlet which is located on Jl. Tanjung Karang No.3 Kebon Melati, akarta This center, was designed and centered on inclusivity and accessibility, so that customers at Starbucks Community Store Tata Puri will be served by local Deaf and hearing-impaired baristas who proudly wear green aprons.

According to Starbucks Community Store Tata Puri said this store provides a third place where the Deaf and hearing impaired community can gather, socialize, and build relationships with one another.

Deaf Baristas will wear green aprons with the Starbucks logo embroidered in Sign Language, all sign language employees will wear “I Sign” pins. Customers who are new to or unfamiliar with Sign Language can use a special system to order drinks and food using a writing tablet.

This outlet also has a community area to support the Gerkatin (Indonesian Deaf Welfare Movement) and Pusbisindo (Indonesian Sign Language Center) programs – two organizations that have partnered with Starbucks Indonesia to increase socialization of the use of sign language.

Anthony McEvoy, Head of PT Sari Coffee Indonesia, the official licensee for the Starbucks brand in Indonesia, stated that the inauguration of the Signing Store is a major achievement for Starbucks Indonesia, which celebrates its 20th anniversary in Indonesia.

This special store demonstrates Starbucks’ commitment to creating a more inclusive and diverse work environment, and expanding access to all communities. Starbucks Indonesia is pleased to see the enthusiasm from the Deaf community when opening registration.

Anastasia Dwiyani, Senior General Manager of Human Capital at PT Sari Coffee Indonesia, added that more than 150 people registered from all over the country. The handpicked baristas come from a diverse group, including former swimmers and models.
