JOKOWI: I DESIGNATE KURA KURA BALI SEZ FOR TOURISM-CREATIVE INDUSTRY

PRESIDENT Joko Widodo (Jokowi) established the 498-hectare Kura Kura Bali Special Economic Zone (SEZ) to support tourism and creative industry business activities.

As a copy of Government Regulation (PP) Number 23 of 2023 concerning Kura Kura Bali SEZ reported from the Legal Documentation and Information Network (JDIH) of the Ministry of State Secretariat, Jakarta, Saturday, President Jokowi established the SEZ which is located in South Denpasar District, Denpasar, Bali.

“That in order to accelerate job creation and regional development of Denpasar City, Bali Province in supporting regional economic development and the national economy, it is necessary to develop special economic zones,” wrote the considerations in the PP signed by President Jokowi on April 5, 2023.

One of the other considerations is that the Serangan area as part of the Denpasar City area, Bali Province has met the criteria and requirements to be designated as a special economic zone. Business activities in the Kura Kura Bali SEZ, according to the PP, are aimed at tourism and creative industries.

Government Regulation 23/2023 also regulates the existence of the National Council for Special Economic Zones which has the task, among others, of determining the business entity that will develop and manage the Kura Kura Bali SEZ within a maximum period of thirty days after the PP comes into force, namely on April 5, 2023.

The Kura Kura Bali SEZ development and management business entity is also responsible for financing the development and management of the Kura Kura Bali SEZ. The business entity is tasked with carrying out the development of the Kura Kura Bali SEZ until it is ready to operate no later than 36 months after this PP comes into force.

The PP also explains that the readiness to operate the Kura Kura Bali SEZ is outlined in a development action plan which includes the readiness of infrastructure and facilities, human resources, administrative control devices.

“The National Council for Special Economic Zones conducts an evaluation of the completion of development and readiness to operate the Kura Kura Bali Special Economic Zone by business entities. The Government Regulation is stipulated on April 5, 2023 and promulgated on the same date,” the PP states.

Kura Kura Bali SEZ can bring in investments of up to Rp104 trillion. Kura-kura Bali SEZ, which has been decided by the government to become a special economic zone and is in the process, therefore the expectation is that the total investment that can be achieved is around IDR104 trillion in the next 30 years.

It is estimated that the area in the long term until 2052 will be able to absorb 99 thousand workers. As for the short term, the first 5 years are predicted to be able to bring in IDR12 trillion in investment and open 5 thousand jobs. It is expected that Kura Kura Bali SEZ can complement the Sanur SEZ on the island of Bali to increase tourism. [antaranews/photo special]
