DOMESTIC FOCUS, GARUDA WILL PARTNER WITH EMIRATES TO QATAR AIRWAYS

THE MINISTER of State-Owned Enterprises (BUMN), Erick Thohir, revealed that the national airline PT Garuda Indonesia Tbk (GIAA) will cooperate with a number of international airlines.

This is in line with the company’s focus on domestic flights. Erick mentioned several airlines namely Qatar Airways, Emirates and Singapore Airlines (SQ).

“There is a plan in mind that Garuda will cooperate with flights that can provide accessibility for Indonesian people to fly abroad, such as Qatar, Emirates, SQ,” he said when met at the Ministry of BUMN office, Thursday (25/5).

Erick explained, after the restructuring process, the company will indeed look for strategic partners or investors. One of them is with the Indonesia Investment Authority (INA).

“Garuda will focus on domestic flights. There are indeed plans for the next step after the restructuring, Garuda is looking for a strategic partner,” he continued.

However, he could not disclose investors who have approached Garuda Indonesia. This is in light of the turbulent financial market conditions due to the issue of US debt defaults.

“Already (talked to investors). But wait, looking for a partner right now with the American issue situation that has failed to pay, the market is also nervous,” concluded Erick.

Previously, news about Garuda Indonesia’s foreign investors had first circulated from Erick. He said there is a potential foreign investor who is a leading international airline from the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

“Indeed, one of them, we can see can be Emirates, can Etihad, which is an improvement in the logistics of our country’s air ecosystem. But it hasn’t finished yet, it was just the presentation yesterday, it’s still long,” Erick told reporters at the DPR Building, recently. [sources/photo special]
