WONDERFUL Indonesia as the Indonesian government’s national branding to improve the image of the country’s tourism in the international world is again working on the American market through Expo Indonesia en Mexico 2023.
Expo Indonesia en Mexico 2023 is an event commemorating the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Indonesia and Mexico, which will be held at the Centro de Conveciones, Mexico, on 3–6 August 2023, with the theme ‘Reconnecting and Showcasing Wonderful Indonesia in The American Market’.
Expo Indonesia en Mexico 2023 (EIM 2023) presented the Trade, Tourism and Investment (TTI) exhibition for the first time, as a collaborative effort between the Indonesian Embassy in Mexico City, the Indonesian Trade Promotion Center (ITPC) in Mexico City, the Indonesian Ministry of Trade, the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy, as well as the Ministry of Investment/BKPM.
The Expo targets 10,000 visitors divided into the TTI exhibition, Tade Forum, Investment Forum and Tourism Business Forum which are attended by representatives of the Under-Secretary of Tourism Mexico, and the Undersecretary of Tourism of Economic Development Ministry of Colima, as well as the Secretary of Tourism of Tamaulipas. The Deputy for Marketing of Tourism Ministry, Ni Made Ayu Marthini, was also one of the speakers, who discussed the development of Indonesia’s 2023 tourism and creative economy.
According to the Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy, Sandiaga Uno, in his statement, in Jakarta, Saturday (8/05), 2023, said the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) noted that foreign tourist arrivals to Indonesia grew +250.33% yoy to 5.19 million visit. On a monthly basis, foreign tourist visits to Indonesia in June reached 1.06 million visits, marking the highest realization since 2020 before the COVID-19 pandemic.
Likewise, tourist visits from the Americas, which is an important market focus for Indonesian tourism, have increased with a quite significant trend since the opening of the border in 2022.
In the January-June 2023 period, tourists from the Americas recorded 267,147 visits, or an increase of 403.55% in the same period the previous year. Mexico as one of the largest markets for the Americas region has reached 5,734 visits, or an increase of 601.84%.
“This development is a good sign for the revival of the Indonesian tourism industry, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic status was lifted by WHO. The climate for the tourism industry which has started to be conducive is seized as an opportunity by the Tourism Ministry to rework the main market for foreign tourists from the Americas through a series of promotional activities throughout the year and this time in Mexico City. We hope that this activity can support the achievement of the target of 8.5 million foreign tourists in 2023 and create 4.4 million jobs in 2024,” said Sandiaga.
The Tourism Ministry participates in and supports Expo Indonesia en Mexico 2023 activities by facilitating the presence of tourism industry representatives (accommodations, travel agents and tour operators) that focus on the American continent market, activation of promotional activities for Indonesian tourist destinations especially 5 Super Priority Tourism Destinations (DPSPs), sales of tour packages Indonesia and business matching, meetings with Mexican travel agents, filling out visitor surveys, information services and distribution of Indonesian tourism promotional materials, as well as interactive games (online and offline).
“The Ministry of Tourism also supports the performance of the arts team brought by the Diaspora team in America at the event,” he said.
Meanwhile, Deputy for Marketing, Ni Made Ayu Marthini said that Wonderful Indonesia’s active participation in the series of activities at Expo Indonesia en Mexico 2023 was a strategic step to re-establish the position of the Wonderful Indonesia brand in America so that it remains top of mind.
“One of them is through the dissemination of information to the public regarding the development of tourist destinations in Indonesia and adjustments to current trends and needs of travelers,” said Ni Made Ayu.
She explained that according to BPS data in 2022, the Americas is a potential market for quality tourism with an average spending per visit reaching US$2,248 per visit with an average length of stay of 17 nights.
“Tourists from Mexico really like nature and adventure tourism, such as seeing orangutans in Kalimantan, mountains and volcanic craters in Java and Bali both in the south and north. They also include repeater tourists or return visits and adventures to the islands of Sumatra, Sulawesi, Lombok and East Nusa Tenggara (NTT).
