THE DIFFRENCES TO SEARCH FOR HOLIDAY REFERENCES ACROSS GENERATIONS

MULTI-brand hotel and accommodation platform RedDoorz Indonesia released the results of their survey on how to find intergenerational vacation references and showed quite significant differences.

Through a press release received on Saturday, the survey involved 139 RedDoorz customers from Gen Z (age 15-26 years), Millennials (27-42 years), and Gen X (age 43-58 years) to understand their behavior and habits in holiday. The survey was conducted during the school holiday period in July 2023.

“There are three considerations for domestic tourists when booking a hotel, namely affordable prices (96%), location close to tourist attractions, the city center and culinary centers (77%), as well as cleanliness and comfort of the hotel (58%),” said Head of Integrated Communications RedDoorz Indonesia Cut Nany.

Based on the survey results, as many as 67% of tourists from the three generations tend to choose a vacation with family with the most number of days spent for seven days. For Gen Z tourists, besides vacationing with family, they also prefer to vacation with friends (as many as 32%).

The use of social media, such as Instagram (78%), TikTok (58%), and Youtube (28%) are the media most used by Gen Z and Millennial tourists to get inspiration for vacation destinations. Meanwhile, more Gen Xers still rely on recommendations from friends or family when looking for holiday references (62%).

In terms of selecting vacation destinations, natural tourist destinations (54%), such as mountains and beaches, as well as city tourism (47%) are the two favorite tourist destinations of all generations. However, in terms of favorite destination cities, Gen Z and Millennials often choose to vacation in the Special Region of Yogyakarta. Meanwhile, many Gen-X tourists choose Bali as their main destination for a vacation.

This shows that the two destinations, namely Yogyakarta and Bali, are still attractive as favorite locations to spend holidays with family.

In addition, the survey also found that as many as 66% of tourists from the three generations prefer to use private vehicles during their vacations to make it easier for them to move from one location to another. In terms of lodging, they still choose hotels (77%), villas (9%), and motels (5%) as their preferred places to stay.

During the school holiday period last July 2023, as many as 67% of tourists who rented rooms at RedDoorz and their multibrand hotels chose to stay overnight for up to three days with 1-2 rooms rented per night. The average room rental price they choose ranges from IDR 200,000 to IDR 500,000.

Another finding in the survey is the high choice of non-cash transactions in paying for hotel bookings. Previously, Bank Indonesia (BI) had indeed encouraged the public to maximize non-cash payments during the July 2023 school holiday season.

To anticipate a spike in non-cash transactions and ensure their smooth running, BI has also asked Payment Service Providers (PJP) to prepare infrastructure to deal with increased transactions. This is also evident from the results of the same survey that during school holidays, many tourists choose non-cash payment methods, such as bank transfers or virtual accounts (51%) to make hotel room payments compared to paying in cash (31%).
