THE Department of Cooperatives, Small and Medium Enterprises and Trade of Surabaya City, East Java, stated that Surabaya’s typical batik motifs are in demand by the public as evidenced by the large number of batik orders that have to be limited.
“Orders are limited, because many Surabaya batiks are also bought as souvenirs,” said the Head of the Surabaya City Cooperatives, Small and Medium Enterprises and Trade (Dinkopdag) Department, Dewi Soeriyawati, in a statement in Surabaya, Friday (10/27), 2023.
Dewi said that currently batik is available in all areas of the City of Heroes. “We even often hold training for batik. Apart from food products, that tourists who visit Surabaya also often order batik at the Sentra Kriya Gallery (SKG). The tourists bought typical Surabaya batik as souvenirs,” she said.
Dewi explained that several times at SKG, they order souvenirs. So apart from food, batik is also often bought, even hotels also order at SKG. There are at least six Surabaya batik motifs that have been patented. The six batik motifs are Batik Remo Suroboyoan, Batik Sparkling, Batik Abhi Boyo, Batik Gembili Wonokromo, Batik Kembang Bungur and Batik Kintir-kintiran.
One of the efforts made by the Surabaya City Government (Pemkot) to promote batik is through events and exhibitions. Most recently, the city government together with the Regional National Crafts Council (Dekranasda) collaborated with designer Gita Orlin to bring Surabaya batik to the Indonesia International Modest Fashion Festival (IN2MF). This international scale fashion show will take place for five days on 25-29 October 2023 at the Jakarta Convention Center (JCC).
Dewi stated that the IN2MF event was an opportunity to introduce Surabaya batik on the national and international stage. Through this event, it is hoped that MSMEs, especially Surabaya batik, can move up in class.
“This event is an opportunity for our Micro Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) to move up in class. So, it is to introduce Surabaya batik on the national and international stage,” she concluded. [antaranews]
