THE INDONESIAN Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy is encouraging an increase in the number of domestic flights in an effort to reduce soaring plane ticket prices.
According to the Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy, Sandiaga Uno, in the End of Year Press Conference (JPAT) at the Soesilo Soedarman Hall, Sapta Pesona Building, Jakarta, Friday (12/22) 2023, said that domestic flight ticket prices are currently considered less affordable for the public. We want to encourage an increase in the number of planes and flights. Because before the pandemic (COVID-19) the number of aircraft operating was above 700, and now it is only 400. So, there is a deficit of around 300.
Sandiaga assesses that the deficit in the number of airplanes in operation is one of the factors causing airplane ticket prices to soar. Because with a deficit in the number of aircraft, it will result in a reduction in the number of available flight seats.
Therefore, Sandiaga said that his party is currently continuing to coordinate with the Ministry of Transportation and the Ministry of BUMN (State-Owned Enterprises) to increase the number of aircraft available, increase the number of flights, and open new domestic flight routes.
This collaboration was carried out as an effort to reduce airline ticket prices so that they are more affordable for the public so that the target of 1.25 billion-1.5 billion domestic tourist movements in 2024 can be optimized.
“We continue to monitor, encourage and take action to increase the number of flights. The target for foreign tourist visits in 2024 is 9.49 million to 14.3 million visits and domestic tourist trips of 1.25 billion-1.5 billion, this is impossible for us to achieve. if there are no additional flights,” he said.
“I invite all parties to collaborate together to maintain the continuity of ticket prices determined by the Government. Now is the time for us to rise together by encouraging more flights and planes (routes) so that ticket prices become more affordable, airlines can make a profit and tourists can get tickets at more affordable prices,” concluded Sandiaga.
