JAPAN is one of the favorite tourist destinations. There are various cultures and interesting culinary delights on offer in Japan. Nowadays, tourists can visit Japan more easily. This country can be visited without using a visa. This provision also applies to Indonesian (RI) passport holders.
There are several terms and conditions that must be met to visit Japan without a visa. Basically, a visa is a permit document issued by the destination country for someone who wants to enter a country.
Recently, a number of countries have provided visa-free access for Indonesian citizens. Apart from that, Indonesian passport holders can also obtain a visa-on-arrival or eTA (Electronic Travel Authority). If you want to visit Japan, Indonesian citizens must have an electronic passport (e-passport) which was launched by the Ministry of Law and Human Rights in 2011.
Reporting from the official website of the Directorate General of Immigration, the Indonesian e-passport is designed with a chip that is capable of storing biometric data. That way, e-passport holders can pass through autogate at airports that provide this facility.
One of the advantages of using an Indonesian e-passport is visa-free entry to Japan through the Visa Waiver program, Mother. According to the Yogyakarta Immigration Office website, the Japanese Visa Waiver is a program that allows tourists to enter Japan without applying for a visa.
“Indonesian citizens are required to have an electronic passport in order to obtain this type of visa,” wrote the Yogyakarta Immigration Office, quoted Tuesday (01/16), 2024.
Meanwhile, the official website of the Japanese Embassy in Indonesia states that the visa exemption for Indonesian e-passport holders is valid for visits of a maximum of 15 days only.
“If you plan to stay more than 15 days or aim to work in Japan, you must apply for a VISA by following the applicable regulations. Indonesian citizens holding passports other than e-passports still need a visa to enter Japan,” the statement continued.
The following are the conditions and procedures for going to Japan without using a visa:
1. Japanese Visa Exemption System (JAVES)
Starting March 27, 2023, online Pre-departure Registration and issuance of proof of electronic Visa Exemption Registration will be carried out through the Japan Visa Exemption System (JAVES).
That way, applicants who use this system no longer need to go to the Japanese Representative Office or Visa Center (JVAC).
2. Pre-Departure Registration Application Procedure using JAVES
Applicants must first create an account on the JAVES website to follow the Pre-departure Registration application procedure. After completing the registration procedure, you will receive an email notification.
Travelers who have completed E-passport Pre-departure Registration via JAVES are required to display the “Visa Exemption Registration Notification” on their device or gadget, not in the form of a screenshot or printout.
Those who do not use this system can apply for Pre-departure Visa Free Registration at the Japanese Representative Office in Indonesia (specifically Jakarta at JVAC) using paper media. After that, the applicant will get a sticker as proof of Visa Free Registration in the e-passport. [sources/photo special]
