RI PROPOSES PONOROGO TO JOIN UNESCO’s WORLD CREATIVE CITIES NETWORK

THE INDONESIAN (RI) government has officially proposed Ponorogo Regency and Malang City to join the UNESCO-managed World Creative City Network (UCCN).

“Praise the Lord, Ponorogo Regency and Malang City have been selected to be submitted to UNESCO. Of course, this is a long way for us to become part of the world creative cities,” said the head of Ponorogo regency tourism, culture and sports agency, Judha Slamet Sarwo Edhie in Ponorogo, Thursday (10/17), 2024.

This development is certainly good news for the people of Ponorogo. For it is not only Ponorogo that wants to join the UCCN.

In addition to Ponorogo, there are several cities and regencies that made it to the top six that also have the same desire, including Bantul, Tangerang, Buleleng, Malang and Makassar. In addition, Ponorogo Regency was eliminated in 2023 to be proposed to UNESCO.

“In 2023, we became the first six. At that time, Ponorogo Regency was eliminated from Surakarta and Depok. Where Indonesia nominated the superior sector of handicrafts and folk art was Surakarta City, even so, we will never give up, let alone surrender,” he said.

Later in the session held by UNESCO, Ponorogo Regency will represent a creative city in Indonesia through the Craft and Folk-Art category. Which includes the development of arts and culture, fashion, media, handicrafts, crafts, culinary and gastronomy.

He explained that on Monday, October 14, we were summoned to the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy. Said a number of benefits could be obtained if Indonesia entered the world’s creative city, including facilitating cooperation between countries, introducing culture and opening opportunities for economic growth in the creative economy sector. In addition, the art of Reog Ponorogo is also currently being proposed as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage.

“Of course, we have to be really grateful for the current achievements. Indonesia was able to submit two nominations at the same time, namely as a World Creative City Network and Reog Ponorogo, which was proposed at the UNESCO ICU and is just waiting for the hearing on December 2-7 (2024),” he concluded.
