GARUDA Indonesia Batik Pikachu livery represents a collaboration between local and global intellectual property (IP). The collaboration between PT Garuda Indonesia and The Pokémon Company has resulted in the creation of a new thematic livery design for the Pikachu Jet GA-2. This design features the Pikachu character wearing a batik shirt on both sides of the Garuda Indonesia Airbus A330-300 wide-body aircraft.
At the launch of the Pikachu Jet GA-2 on Friday (11/08) evening at Senayan Park, Jakarta, Deputy Minister of Creative Economy, Irene Umar expressed her appreciation for this collaboration, which exemplifies the potential for meaningful collaboration between local and global IP.
“This collaboration platform demonstrates the potential of IP and the ability of local IP, in this case batik, to partner with global IP. “This demonstrates the global recognition of local IP,” stated Irene.
One of the key outcomes is the promotion of batik as a cultural heritage of Indonesia. Furthermore, the Pikachu batik design will create business opportunities and employment for hand-drawn batik craftsmen in various Indonesian regions.
“I would like to know in which city this hand-drawn batik (Pikachu) is produced. I would also like to visit it.” At present, there is a common perception that the creative economy in Indonesia is closely linked to digital. This includes games, animation, films, and other related sectors. “In fact, the creative economy should be viewed in a more comprehensive manner, extending upstream to encompass the very source of creativity,” she said.
She explained that the creative economy should be viewed in a more comprehensive manner, encompassing not only digital products but also traditional art forms such as batik and dance. Furthermore, Indonesia boasts a rich cultural heritage. It is my hope that the collaboration between PT Garuda Indonesia and The Pokémon Company will encourage the emergence of more local IPs and facilitate collaboration with other global IPs.
The creative economy is accorded a significant role in the vision, mission, and work program set forth by President Prabowo Subianto and Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka in Asta Cita.
This demonstrates a strong commitment to the creative economy and the creative industry as a new engine of growth, with the potential to accelerate the contribution of this sector to GDP, particularly in terms of creating employment opportunities for the community.
“We anticipate that the next stage will see an increase in collaborative initiatives, given Indonesia’s rich cultural heritage. “In addition to batik, we also have tenun and ulos,” stated Irene.
“Furthermore, I hope that we can all demonstrate enthusiasm when we encounter various forms of Indonesian culture in the marketplace. “My objective in collaboration with Minister Teuku (Minister of Creative Economy) over the next five years is to ascertain how Indonesian culture can be positioned to work in conjunction with global IP such as Pikachu and others,” Deputy Minister Irene affirmed.
The Pikachu Jet GA-2 thematic livery design is the second of two planned designs, created in collaboration between Garuda Indonesia and The Pokémon Company. The Pikachu Jet GA-2 thematic livery design represents the diversity of cultural richness, characteristics, and creative products typical of Indonesia. It will later be applied to Garuda Indonesia’s wide-body Airbus A330-300 aircraft, which is scheduled to be officially operated in March 2025.
Meanwhile, Garuda Indonesia President Director Irfan Setiaputra stated that the launch of the Pikachu Jet GA-2 thematic livery design represents the company’s ongoing commitment to meeting the public’s enthusiasm for new and interesting flight experiences through the Pokémon Air Adventure program.
“The appearance of Pikachu in a batik shirt on our aircraft, particularly on the Garuda Indonesia A330-300 fleet, which serves a variety of domestic and international routes, is a testament to our dedication and shared vision with The Pokémon Company. It exemplifies our commitment to providing an enhanced experience for our passengers through the introduction of joy and happiness in flight, which aligns with Garuda Indonesia’s mission of showcasing the diverse characteristics of the Indonesian nation on a global scale,” Irfan concluded.
