GIANT STEP is a progressive rock band from Bandung, formed in 1973. The band is considered one of the pioneers of progressive music (or art rock) in Indonesia, drawing inspiration from English musical groups such as King Crimson and Jethro Tull. Giant Step stands out for their courage to bring their own songs, unlike many other local bands who often bring songs from international bands.
Giant Step was founded by Benny Soebardja along with other original members: Benny (guitar & vocals), Deddy (bass & vocals), Yockie (kibor & vocals), Sammy (drums).
In 1975, they began their journey into the recording world and released their first album, Giant Step Mark-i (1976). This album contains ten songs, five of which are in English, including: (1). Childhood and the Seabird, (2). Far Away, (3). Lucky Paradise, (4). Keep a smile, (5). My life. The lyrics of the songs were written by Bob Dook, an Australian living in Bandung.
As for their career and musical development, the band shows its strong progressive identity on the second, third and fourth albums. In the period 1975-1985, Giant Step produced seven albums that enriched the Indonesian rock music scene.
After being vacuum, Giant Step Bangkit in 1983 and performed with other rock bands at the Vista Magazine Music Jamboree at Taman Ria Remaja Senayan. Their formation at that time involved: Benny Soebardja, Oetje F Tekol, Albert Warnerin, Triawan Munaf, Erwin Badudu, Jelly Tobing.
Naumu at the end of the Giant Step terus journey existed to appear at the solo drum Jelly Tobing demo event in 1992. Unfortunately, internal problems ended the band’s journey, leaving a strong legacy in the history of Indonesian rock music. [sources/photo special]
