BALI ELECTRICITY SUPPLY RETURNS TO NORMAL FOLLOWING BLACKOUT

BALI’s electricity supply has almost returned to normal after a blackout Friday (05/3), 2025 afternoon that affected public facilities and the operation of the tourist island’s airport, an official said.

The Bali provincial government, citing state electricity company PLN, said the blackout affected 80 percent of the province.

According to Gregorius Adi Trianto, PLN’s executive vice president of corporate communications & TJSL, the company has deployed hundreds of personnel to deal with the blackout in the island province, which reportedly occurred at 4 p.m. local time.

He added that power had been restored “to hospitals, the airport, seaports and public centers,” and assured that Bali’s power would be fully restored on Friday.

As of 7:30 p.m., power had been gradually restored to more than 940,000 affected residents in Bali. “The gradual restoration is taking place in all affected areas,” he said.

While an investigation into the cause of the blackout is underway, Trianto noted that early indications point to a likely disruption in the Java-Bali submarine power cable system.

Separately, the general manager of Bali’s I Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport, Ahmad Syaugi Shahab, confirmed that power had been restored to Bali’s airport. “All arrivals and departures have returned to normal,” the airport manager said.

The airport used its backup generator to maintain operations during the blackout. Some flights were delayed while the airport operator activated the backup system. Fortunately, he said, the backup generator was functioning normally and had sufficient fuel.

Meanwhile, Governor I Wayan Koster has instructed the relevant authorities to speed up the restoration process, warning that the blackout must not extend to Saturday (May 3, 2025), when Balinese Hindus celebrate Kuningan Day.

The province is also hosting the International Federation of Sport Climbing (IFSC) World Cup in the Nusa Dua area from May 2-4. The provincial government has confirmed that power has been restored to the site. [antaranews/photo special]
