THE INDONESIAN Ministry of Tourism sees the tourism industry as an important pillar that maintains good national economic performance amidst increasingly uncertain global dynamics.
“For Indonesia, in the midst of this challenging global situation, tourism is one of the important pillars for our self-defense (economy),” Deputy for Marketing of the Ministry of Tourism Ni Made Ayu Marthini said in Jakarta recently.
Speaking at the “Promotion of Yunnan Tourism and Culture in Indonesia”, Made said that this background made her party increasingly confident in strengthening tourism cooperation with all parties, including Yunnan Province in Southwest China.
“Moreover, tourism is the most suitable key to promote interaction between the people of the two countries,” she said.
To this end, she agreed on the need to increase connectivity with China, which can be achieved, among other things, by increasing the frequency of flights from Indonesia to the Bamboo Curtain Country and vice versa.
In addition to connectivity, the Deputy Tourism Minister said that tourism promotion between Indonesia and Yunnan also needs to be strengthened, as many Indonesians are still unfamiliar with the tourist attractions in the southwest Chinese province.
According to her, Indonesia and Yunnan have striking similarities, namely the cultural diversity of various ethnic groups, as well as the natural riches and world heritage sites recognized by UNESCO.
Made also explained that Indonesia had received almost 1.2 million tourists from China in 2024, slightly below the previously set target of 1.5 million.
The Deputy Tourism Minister hopes that strengthening tourism cooperation between Indonesia and China, especially Yunnan, will help increase the number of tourist arrivals, which will bring economic benefits to both countries.
She also believes that the similarities can add value to efforts to promote tourism in Indonesia and Yunnan Province.
As reported by Indonesian Ambassador to China Djauhari Oratmangun last March, Indonesia is targeting two million tourists from China by 2025.
Indonesia recorded the highest number of Chinese tourist visits in 2018 with a total of 2,139,161 visitors, while the number of Chinese tourists in 2024 reached 1,198,582 people. [traveltext.id/photo special]
