AGODA’s digital travel platform revealed travel trends during the mid-year holiday season in Indonesia. The data shows an increase in interest in domestic destinations that are not usually the first choice, as well as an interest in cultural experiences in various Asian countries.
The research shows that during the recent holiday season, Indonesian families were looking for interesting and memorable tours for all family members. These tours ranged from enjoying the beauty of nature in various local destinations to spiritual experiences and cultural cruises to foreign destinations.
Based on Agoda application data, the highest growth in domestic travel interest by Indonesian families during the middle holiday was in Bandar Lampung (103%), followed by Garut (84%) and Dieng (63%). These findings show an increase in interest in destinations offering unique experiences with nature and wildlife and rich local culture.
These destinations offer beautiful beaches and enchanting tropical islands in Bandar Lampung, the famous Nisa elephant calf in Way Kambas National Park, mountain scenery in Garut, and the unique local culture. Dieng is known for its rare “Embun Upas” phenomenon, which occurs between volcanic craters and ancient temples.
Interest in traveling abroad among Indonesian families has also increased, especially to destinations such as Mecca, Saudi Arabia (234%), Sapporo, Japan (222%), and Shanghai, China (102%). This trend shows that Indonesian families are increasingly taking advantage of school holidays to seek meaningful experiences that combine tourism with spiritual elements and cultural enrichment.
Mecca offers a unique blend of spiritual reflection and quality time with family. Many families extend their pilgrimage to nearby cultural destinations such as Turkey, Egypt, and Jordan. In Sapporo, the atmosphere during the mid-year holiday was enlivened by cultural festivals, outdoor concerts, and stunning scenes, such as those at Lake Toya, creating the perfect blend of culture and natural beauty.
Shanghai is becoming increasingly popular thanks to the Chinese visa-free policy, the opening of the direct flight route from Medan, and efforts to develop family-friendly tourism, which makes it more accessible and in demand.
According to Gede Gunawan, Agoda Indonesia’s Senior Country Director, said, we saw a shift in travel patterns during the school holiday season, with more families interested in exploring lesser-known places in Indonesia and international cities offering cultural richness and unique experiences.
“This reflects a developing preference for more meaningful and flexible journeys that can adapt to the interests and needs of family members of various ages. The School Holiday Sale program from Agoda, which offers an additional 5% discount on certain accommodations, is our commitment to making family vacations more accessible and enjoyable,” he said.
With over 6 million vacation rentals, 130,000 flight routes, and 300,000 activity options, Agoda simplifies vacation planning for families, both domestically and abroad. [traveltext.id/photo special]
