THE INDONESIAN (RI) government and the European Union have strengthened bilateral relations through the Schengen visa cascade policy, which now officially applies to Indonesian citizens.
The European Commission officially announced this policy on July 23, 2025, following a July 13, 2025 meeting in Brussels, Belgium, between President Prabowo and the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen.
According to Kompas.com on recently, the Cascade Schengen visa is a special policy that provides more convenience than the general rules of the Schengen visa code. Through this policy, Indonesian citizens can apply for a multi-entry Schengen visa valid for up to five years as long as they have had a legitimate Schengen visa within the last three years.
Passport applicants must also have a sufficient validity period to accommodate the visa period. Which countries are included in the Schengen visa area?
30 countries that can be visited with a Schengen visa
Cascade visa holders can travel freely to Schengen area member countries for short visits without needing to apply for a separate visa for each country.
Thirty countries implement this policy: 25 European Union (EU) member countries and four non-EU countries—Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland. As long as the visa is valid, cascade visa holders have the right to travel to the Schengen region with the same provisions as visa-free citizens: a maximum visit of 90 days within a 180-day period.
However, it should be noted that a Schengen visa is a type of cascade visa, so it does not permit work in destination countries.
