TOURISM SECTOR BOOSTS ECONOMIC GROWTH IN QUARTER 2, 2025: MINISTRY

THE MINISTRY of Tourism revealed that the sector contributed significantly to Indonesia’s economic growth, reaching 5.12% year-on-year in Q2 2025.

At the “Press Conference on Economic Growth in Q2 2025” on Tuesday (May 8) at the Office of the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs, Tourism Minister Widiyanti Putri Wardhana said, we are pleased that Indonesia’s economic growth reached 5.12% year-on-year in Q2 2025, exceeding the achievements in Q1 2025 and Q2 2024.

The minister explained that the tourism sector contributed significantly to economic growth in Q2 2025 because the top four sectors contributing to GDP originate from and are related to the tourism sector.

This is evident in the tourism sector’s contribution to GDP by business sector in the second quarter of 2025, including the “other services” sector, such as entertainment and recreation services.

The “other services” sector saw the highest growth in Q2 2025, at 11.31%, driven by an increase in domestic and international tourist visits.

The minister explained that there were 331.37 million domestic tourist trips in the second quarter of 2025, a 22.32% increase compared to the second quarter of 2024.

Meanwhile, international tourist visits reached 3.89 million, a 13.96% increase compared to the second quarter of 2024. During the first semester of 2025, we recorded 613.78 million domestic trips and 7.05 million international visits,” Widyanti said.

She further explained that the corporate services sector was the second-highest growth sector, with growth reaching 9.31%. This growth was supported by increased activity in travel agencies.

Furthermore, the transportation and trade sector experienced the third-highest growth rate, at 8.52%. This was supported by various economic stimulus policies and discounts on airline and train tickets. The accommodation and food and beverage sector were fourth, with growth of 8.04%.

This sector is largely driven by tourism activities. The next effort to boost Indonesia’s economic growth comes in the lead-up to Republic of Indonesia Independence Day on August 17. The Ministry of Tourism has coordinated with the Indonesian Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI) to celebrate the 80th anniversary of Indonesia’s independence by offering attractive tour packages and discounts at hotels and restaurants during the holiday,” she affirmed.

Widiyanti added that tourists will be able to take advantage of the national holiday on August 18, 2025, to travel domestically. Hotels have begun advertising promotions including discounts of up to 80% to celebrate the anniversary.

The Ministry of Tourism invites the public to attend the 58 Kharisma Event Nusantara festivals, which continue until the end of the year and include the Pacu Jalur festival from August 20 to 24, 2025.

Starting in October 2025, the Ministry of Tourism will launch a campaign for the Christmas and New Year holidays of 2025-2026. The ministry will coordinate with associations and businesses to offer promotions and tour packages that will attract domestic tourists.

“These efforts are combined with economic stimulus for the supply side, including transportation discount policies, to maintain public purchasing power,” said the Minister of Tourism, quoting the Minister of Transportation.

Meanwhile, Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto explained that increased public mobility was one factor in economic growth in the second quarter. This boosted consumption and the tourism sector, particularly among international tourists, reaching 140,000, and domestic tourists, reaching 100,000.

“This shows that the government’s efforts have encouraged year-on-year growth of domestic tourists, reaching 23.32%. Furthermore, various government programs, including discounts on flights and toll roads, boosted the transportation sector,” Airlangga concluded. [traveltext.id]
