BMKG REPORTS HEAVY DOWNPOUR IN BALI, LIKELY TO LAST ALL WEEK

INDONESIA’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported that extreme rainfall of up to 150 mm was recorded across most regions of Bali on September 9–10, 2025, and warned that the rain is expected to continue throughout the week.

“For the next three days, we see other potentials for light to medium rain in most areas in Bali,” BMKG’s Region III Office Head Cahyo Nugroho stated here on Wednesday (09/10).

According to observations, heavy rain in the range of 50–150 mm swept almost all regions in Bali, including Jembrana, Tabanan, Badung, Gianyar, Klungkung, and Karangasem districts and Denpasar City, since Tuesday (September 9).

The downpour that continued until Wednesday has caused flooding in several areas on the island, the agency official noted.

Nugroho explained that the inclement weather over the past two days was caused by the equatorial Rossby wave phenomenon, which stimulated the formation of dense rain clouds. “This led to heavy rainfall and thunderstorms,” he said.

Heavy rainfall in Bali has triggered widespread flooding across several areas of the island, including Pura Demak and Teuku Umar streets in the provincial capital, Denpasar, as well as near the iconic Badung Market, which is located along the banks of the Badung River.

In Pengambengan Village, located in the Jembrana District of western Bali, the floodwaters swept away a resident, who remains missing. A search and rescue operation is currently underway, led by local emergency teams.

Flooding in Jembrana has also disrupted the main road connecting Denpasar to the port town of Gilimanuk, resulting in severe traffic congestion.

According to the Bali Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD), the floods have caused trees to fall in the districts of Tabanan and Karangasem, damaging power lines and blocking several roads.

BPBD Head I Nyoman Sidakarya also encouraged residents to evacuate themselves first, as the agency is overwhelmed by the scale of the flooding caused by a 24-hour-long downpour in almost all areas of the island. [antaranews]
