FOREIGN TOURIST VISITS IN JAN-AUGUST REACH RECORD HIGH SINCE PANDEMIC

IN ITS Monthly Performance Report, the Ministry of Tourism reported that the number of foreign tourist visits to Indonesia throughout 2025 reached its highest level since the COVID-19 pandemic.

Tourism Minister Widiyanti Putri Wardhana, at the Sapta Pesona Building in Jakarta, Thursday (September 10), 2025, explained that based on data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), the number of foreign tourist visits in January-August 2025 reached 10.04 million.

This achievement, she continued that marks the highest record for foreign tourist visits in January-August since the COVID-19 pandemic and indicates that Indonesia’s tourism recovery is on the right track.

“Compared to the same period in 2024, which recorded 9.09 million visits, there was a 10.38 percent increase. Meanwhile, in August 2025, foreign tourist visits rose from 1.34 million to 1.51 million, representing a 12.33% increase compared to the previous year,” he said.

Widiyanti explained that the domestic tourism market sector also showed similar growth. From January to August 2025, the number of domestic tourist trips reached 807.55 million, a 19.71% increase compared to the 674.6 million trips recorded in the same period in 2024.

Meanwhile, Deputy Minister Ni Luh Puspa stated that domestic tourist travel plays a crucial role in driving the local economy, particularly through the transportation and public consumption sectors, which contribute directly to national economic growth.

“On the other hand, in the January–August 2025 period, 6.13 million domestic tourist trips were recorded, with 685,000 of these trips occurring in August 2025. This significantly higher number of foreign tourist arrivals than domestic tourist trips resulted in a tourist surplus, or positive tourism balance, for Indonesia,” said Nih Luh.

She concluded that the increasing tourist surplus had a direct impact on net foreign exchange earnings, while strengthening tourism’s contribution to state revenue. [traveltext.id]
