THE US GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN CAUSED 3,658 FLIGHTS TO BE DISTRUPTED

NEARLY 3,700 flights in the United States (US) had been delayed or cancelled on Monday (10/27), 2025 as the government shutdown entered its fourth week, according to the FlightAware.com portal.

“Total delays in, into, or out of the US today: 3,658,” according to the portal. Another 119 flights have been cancelled; the portal added.

Nearly 100 flights were delayed or cancelled at New York’s JFK International Airport. In Atlanta, more than 500 flights were also delayed. Likewise, more than 200 flights were delayed in Charlotte.

US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said Monday that air traffic controllers will stop receiving their salaries on October 28.

Earlier Thursday, Duffy warned that passenger airline departures in the US might be delayed and cancelled if Congress could not pass a government budget bill and end the government shutdown.

The new US fiscal year began on October 1, but Congress failed to approve a budget, leaving the government unable to operate.

The government shutdown in the US led to the cessation of operations of several government agencies funded directly by Congress due to a lack of budget for the next fiscal year, a common situation.

Meanwhile US President Donald Trump previously announced that he could take advantage of the government shutdown to massively reduce staff numbers and salaries.

He claims that the Democratic Party’s position created a budget impasse, and the White House is taking advantage of the current situation to eliminate programs that Republicans don’t like. [Sputnik-OANA/photo special]
