THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ‘BURNOUT’ AND ‘POST-HOLIDAY’ BLUES’

BURNOUT and the post-holiday blues are often confused because they are thought to be related to decreased enthusiasm for work or study. However, clinical psychologist Virginia Hanny, M.Psi., Psychologist, explains that the two conditions are distinct.

“Burnout is characterized by emotional exhaustion, depersonalization or cynicism, and decreased personal accomplishment. Post-holiday blues does not change one’s basic attitude toward work or school,” said Virginia Hanny, when contacted by antaranews.com from Jakarta on Monday (01/5), 2026.

The psychologist, a graduate of Padjajaran University, explained that the differences between burnout and post-holiday blues can be seen in their duration, causes, and individual behavior toward their work.

“The primary distinction between the two is duration. Burnout can persist for years, while the post-holiday blues typically lasts a few days to a maximum of two weeks,” Virginia explained.

Virginia explained that burnout can be caused by prolonged work stress. Conversely, the transition from vacation to routine can trigger a post-holiday blues.

“Regarding individual behavior toward work, someone experiencing burnout can become apathetic and even withdraw from work for an extended period, while individuals experiencing post-holiday blues only feel a temporary reluctance,” she said.

Furthermore, the psychologist specializing in personal growth outlined several strategies that individuals can implement to overcome conditions such as the post-holiday blues. These strategies include gradually re-establishing routines, improving consistent sleep patterns, and setting small goals.

“Maintaining enjoyable activities from vacation, such as light exercise, making time for hobbies and socializing in your daily life, recognizing that these emotions are valid and normal, but not allowing them to linger, and discussing them with loved ones or professionals,” Virginia concluded.
