PT MRT Jakarta (Perseroda) has partnered with seven private developers for the construction of the East-West Phase 2 line, which will connect Kembangan in West Jakarta to Balaraja in Tangerang District, Banten.
“A memorandum of understanding (MoU) will be signed with the seven developers,” said PT MRT Jakarta President Director Tuhiyat at the MRT Journalists Forum event in Jakarta on Tuesday (01/27), 2026.
Tuhiyat explained that the agreement represents an initial step for exploration and assessment, marking the developers’ contribution to the project along the route.
The company will also consider a Public-Private Partnership (PPP), where infrastructure is developed through government-private sector collaboration. This approach addresses budget limitations while applying risk-sharing principles.
The MoU is expected to provide efficiency in financing MRT infrastructure, thereby accelerating the construction process.
MRT Jakarta Business Development Director Farchad Mahfud added that the Phase 2 extension to Tangerang (Kembangan–Balaraja) will involve developer contributions.
“We are preparing for the signing of the MoU for the MRT East-West Phase 2 line on the Banten side. We want to encourage development through developer contribution. The official announcement will be made soon,” he said.
Farchad noted that Jakarta’s traffic congestion is partly driven by passengers from surrounding areas such as Tangerang, South Tangerang, Depok, Bogor, and Bekasi. In response, the 29.9-kilometer Kembangan–Balaraja route is part of the MRT East-West Line (Phase 3/Phase 2 West) and is targeted to start construction around 2026 as part of the National Strategic Project (PSN).
The line will connect West Jakarta to Tangerang, featuring 14 stations (five in Tangerang City and nine in Tangerang District) to enhance connectivity. The MRT route to Balaraja is planned to be built as an elevated line above street level. [antaranews/photo special]
