INDONESIA’s Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs (Komdigi) has begun processing the conditional restoration of access to the generative artificial intelligence chatbot Grok, following a commitment from X Corp to improve compliance with domestic regulations.
The move follows the ministry’s decision in January to temporarily block Grok over concerns about its misuse to generate non-consensual fake pornographic content on the social media platform X. Both the chatbot and the platform are part of ventures owned by Elon Musk.
In a statement cited here on Sunday (2/01), 2026, Komdigi’s Director General of Digital Space Monitoring, Alexander Sabar, emphasized that the restoration of access remains conditional and is being implemented as a measured law enforcement step in cyberspace.
“This conditional normalization has been initiated following X Corp’s written statement outlining concrete plans to improve its services and prevent misuse. We consider this a basis for evaluation, not the end of supervision,” Sabar said.
In a letter addressed to Komdigi Minister Meutya Hafid, the company outlined a series of layered measures to prevent the misuse of Grok. These include strengthening technical safeguards, restricting access to certain features, tightening internal policies and enforcement mechanisms, and activating incident response protocols.
Sabar assured the public that his office will continuously verify and assess the implementation of all pledged measures to ensure their effectiveness in curbing the spread of illegal and explicit content, particularly as part of efforts to protect children in the digital space.
“The Komdigi Ministry will not hesitate to take corrective action, including reimposing a ban on the AI service, should any inconsistencies or violations be identified,” he stressed.
He added that the government remains committed to proportional, transparent, and regulation-based supervisory strategies to safeguard public interests in the digital ecosystem.
As a registered electronic system provider, Sabar continued, X Corp has pledged to cooperate with the government in fulfilling its legal obligations and contributing to the creation of a safe digital environment.
“While the government remains open to constructive dialogue, full compliance with Indonesian regulations is mandatory. This normalization is not an endpoint, but part of ongoing state supervision,” he concluded. [antaranews/photo special]
