INDONESIAN GEN Z PREFERS SHORT TRIPS, BUT MORE FREQUENT VACATIONS

DIGITAL travel platform Agoda revealed that Indonesian Gen Z prefers short, but more frequent trips, rather than the long vacations of the past. They are also increasingly attracted to domestic destinations that offer more meaningful experiences.

These findings indicate that Gen Z prioritizes flexibility, ease of access, and exploratory experiences, making travel more easily a part of their daily lives.

This insight comes from a survey of Asian travelers in the Agoda Travel Outlook Report 2026, which also found that travel for Gen Z is still dominated by group activities, especially with partners and families, rather than solo trips or with friends.

At the same time, most respondents expect their trips to remain dominated by domestic destinations, reflecting a balance between exploration and convenience.

Short, More Frequent Trips Become the New Pattern
Indonesian Gen Z is now traveling more frequently, with shorter trip durations a key trend. Eighty percent of respondents plan to take four to more than eleven trips per year, while 90% choose stays between one and seven days, slightly higher than the average for Gen Z travelers in Asia (86%).

Furthermore, 85% of respondents in Indonesia plan to travel domestically, the highest figure among the countries surveyed. This trend indicates a shift towards more practical and easily planned trips, allowing them to fit into work, study, and personal schedules.

The majority of Gen Z in Indonesia travel primarily for experiences, with outdoor activities (40%), culinary tourism (25%), and cultural exploration (20%) being the primary motivations.

This reflects a more targeted approach to travel planning. Gen Z tends to determine travel destinations based on the experiences they want to have, whether it’s enjoying nature, exploring culture, or seeking new adventures. Destinations are also chosen based on their suitability to these goals.

According to Gede Gunawan, Agoda’s Senior Country Director for Indonesia, it’s interesting to see Gen Z Indonesia making their own country their primary destination. This reflects the diverse experiences available domestically, as well as a growing appreciation for local tourism.

“On the other hand, they remain actively seeking new experiences and adventures. Agoda supports this spirit of exploration with attractive offers on flights, accommodations, and activities, so you can get the most out of every trip,” he said.

With over 6 million vacation rentals, over 130,000 flight routes, and over 300,000 activities, Agoda makes it easy for travelers to plan their entire trip on one platform. This flexibility allows each trip to be tailored to each individual’s style and preferences. [traveltext.id]
