INDONESIA and South Korea are cooperating to develop a Smart City Cooperation Center (SCCC) in Nusantara, Indonesia’s future capital in East Kalimantan.
According to Head of the Nusantara Capital Authority (OIKN) Basuki Hadimuljono said on Friday (06/19), 2026 that the project is a strategic program intended to support the development of the new capital while serving as an educational facility and a showcase for South Korean smart city technology.
“The SCCC is expected to become a center for smart city collaboration between Indonesia and South Korea,” he said.
The facility will include digital and environmental laboratories, a smart city solution demonstration area, and a platform for developing the technology ecosystem in Nusantara.
The project is funded through a South Korean grant worth 9.9 billion won (around US$6.5 million), including 5.5 billion won allocated for construction of the building.
The two-story building will cover about 1,098 square meters. The ground floor will house a control room and meeting facilities, while the upper floor will contain an exhibition area and an AI and robotics laboratory.
An outdoor area will also be developed for urban farming as part of the smart city technology demonstration. Construction is expected to take 10 months and be completed by the end of 2027, said Basuki, a former public works minister.
The grant also covers the preparation of a Smart City Masterplan and Smart Building Protocol by the Korea Institute of Civil Engineering and Building Technology (KICT), as well as the establishment of the Nusantara Smart City Forum and a capacity-building program involving the University of Seoul.
South Korea’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MoLIT) Director Choi Jung-won said the SCCC is expected to facilitate knowledge transfer, capacity building, academic networking, and bilateral cooperation in smart city development.
He concluded that Nusantara has an opportunity to follow the example of Sejong, South Korea’s smart city, and become a model smart city in Indonesia. [antaranews]
