THE Central Statistics Agency (BPS) noted that the Indonesian economy in the first quarter of 2020 grew 2.97% or contracted compared to the same period last year of 5.07%.
According to Head of BPS, Suhariyanto in a virtual press conference in Jakarta said this condition was the same as that experienced by other countries that experienced a deep slowdown.
“BPS noted that the weakening Indonesian economy began to be affected by global conditions in the first quarter of 2020 which experienced a contraction due to the spread of COVID-19,” he said.
Previously, Minister of Finance Sri Mulyani Indrawati had projected that economic growth in the first quarter of 2020 could reach around 4.5 percent to 4.6 percent or starting below five percent. [antaranews/photo special]
