THE INDONESIAN Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI) said hoteliers did not just sit idly by waiting for the pandemic situation to improve, but also took the time to train human resource (HR) capabilities and prepare to welcome guests when the situation was conducive.
“During the decline (occupation), hotels are busy cleaning up or holding training, this training is more increased than when the hotel is open,” said the Head of HR Training Division of PHRI Alexander Nayoan in a recent webinar.
Alexander said, there are hotels that cooperate with certain platforms to hold online training, there are also those who ask employees to watch training videos, both paid and free. All of them aim to improve themselves to be better prepared to serve guests in the future.
“I am happy and proud to see that the hospitality tourism workforce has reached the standard of European countries where multitasking is a must and a necessity,” said Alexander.
For example, housekeeping employees in hotels are given training to be able to work and understand standard operating procedures in other parts so that each employee also has skills in several jobs. However, it all needs to be balanced with the correct record of duties and responsibilities as well as the latest modules so that they are not outdated. Thus, the quality of human resources in hospitality can continue to improve.
Alexander also said that the conditions of hospitality in Indonesia are varied. In some places, occupancy is increasing because people can’t wait to go back on vacation and seek entertainment with a staycation at a hotel.
“For example, in big cities on the island of Java, hotel occupancy has increased. As Minister Sandiaga Uno said, there is revenge tourism, people have been at home for too long to take revenge and want to go outside,” he noted.
Hotels in strategic locations and close to attractions, shopping centers or business activities have increased occupancy. On the other hand, there are also hotels that are in poor condition because only a few guests come.
“I just came from Lombok last week; there the occupancy hotels are only 1-2 rooms. Of the tens of hotels that are open maybe six, seven or eight. Bali too, although it is much better than the implementation of restrictions on community activities (PPKM) period, last week in Bali so from level four to level three, the roads are getting fuller and hotel occupancy is starting to increase, although not significantly,” he concluded.
