EVIDENTLY UNWTO AGAINST INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL RESTRICTIONS POLICY

THE UNITED Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) opposes the overall travel restriction policy which is judged to be unfair and ineffective. Comprehensive travel restrictions have been put in place in recent days by a number of countries.

The call was raised by UNWTO members during the 24th UNWTO General Assembly session which was held in Madrid, Spain on November 30-December 3, 2021.

Countries from all global regions expressed their solidarity with South African countries and called for the immediate lifting of travel bans imposed on certain countries and that international freedom of travel should be upheld, the UNWTO said in a statement on its official website.

In light of recent developments, UNWTO once again reminds countries that the imposition of comprehensive restrictions on travel is discriminatory, ineffective and goes against the recommendations of the World Health Organization or WHO. Overt restrictions can also stigmatize a country or an entire region.

During the UNWTO general assembly, member states and partners, including voices from international organizations and across the private sector, echoed WHO’s advice that travel restrictions should only be imposed as a last resort in response to changing circumstances.

Furthermore, it was emphasized that if restrictions are imposed, they must be proportional, transparent and scientifically based. They should also be introduced to a full appreciation of what it means to stop international travel for the most vulnerable, including developing countries and individuals who depend on tourism for their economies and livelihoods.

Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, UNWTO has called for a coordinated and evidence-based approach as travel and vaccination rates are closely linked. This is to balance public health issues with maintaining the continuity of tourism. Over the past few months, such an approach has proven to be the most effective way forward. [sources/photo special]
