INDONESIA TAKES OVER ADJUSTMENT AIR SPACE SERVICES IN NATUNA

ADJUSTMENT of airspace services is important for Indonesia. Adjustment of air space services (FIR) confirms international recognition of Indonesia’s status as an archipelagic country that has full and exclusive sovereignty in the air space above its territory.

Indonesia finally reached an agreement with Singapore regarding airspace service adjustment (FIR). The approval for the adjustment of the FIR according to the plan was signed in front of President Joko Widodo and Prime Minister of Singapore Lee Hsien Loong on Bintan Island, Riau Islands, Tuesday (1/25). On that occasion, a defense cooperation agreement (DCA) and an extradition treaty between the two countries will also be signed.

According to the Director General of Civil Aviation at the Ministry of Transportation, Novie Riyanto, as quoted from Kompas.com on Friday (1/21) stated that the FIR adjustment was important.

“One of them is confirming international recognition of Indonesia’s status as an archipelagic country that has full and exclusive sovereignty in the air space above its territory in accordance with international law, especially the 1944 Chicago Convention and the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS),” he said

He explained that through various efforts and intensive and continuous negotiations, the Government of Indonesia has succeeded in reaching an agreement with the Government of Singapore regarding FIR. [kompas.com/photo special]
