‘SUPPOSES’ A PHOTOGRAPHY GROUP EXHIBITION AT ARTOTEL THAMRIN, JAKARTA

ARTOTEL Thamrin Jakarta presents a photography group exhibition in collaboration with the SAL Project entitled ‘SUPPOSES’ which will be held at ARTOTEL ARTSpace from August 5 to September 30, 2023.

According to Windi Solomon, ART Director of ARTOTEL Group, said in this photography exhibition, the SAL Project introduced four photography artists namely: Adi Putra, Aulia Yeru, Christina Phan, Vicky Tanzil. There is the name Andy Dewantoro who had the opportunity to become a curator in selecting the works to be displayed.

“Andy Dewantoro is no stranger to the world of Indonesian art. He is also one of the country’s well-established artists who has been involved in his existence and there is no doubt about it,” she said.

Windi added, SUPPOSES (estimate or supposition) itself raises the issue of the lack of appreciation for photo exhibitions in Indonesia, because most of the images of the work are more in demand in the form of canvas media. However, through this exhibition, the SAL Project, assisted by Andy Dewantoro, shows the practice of photographic artists’ work that deserves to be photographed and used as a collection.

Meanwhile Andy Dewantoro explained the four artists adopted photography extensively throughout their respective careers. Most of its uses are in aesthetic and commercial contexts. The group’s exhibition also offers an opportunity to see different sides and their practice.

“In their visualization too, they explore areas that are rarely seen under normal circumstances and this is the potential of the photographic medium both in terms of technique and from the type of visual grammar used. It is hoped that this exhibition of contemporary photography artists for the wider community, especially in public spaces, as displayed at ARTOTEL ARTSpace, ARTOTEL Thamrin Jakarta, is hoped to be able to bring photographers to work with original shots of photographic artists which continue to be crushed with works of digital multimedia which are getting crazier now,” Andy remarked.

He added, there are two main things, namely technical and visual aesthetics, both of which are needed by photographers in producing a good work. Indeed, from a technical point of view, photography talks a lot about tools (cameras and lenses), then about the concept of lighting, and techniques for using a good camera. In terms of visual aesthetics, photography is much broader and more complex, because it involves feelings, visual messages, and the meaning of a photo.

“Although everyone can take photos with existing cameras, photography is not a simple thing to master and understand. Especially now that many people want to become photography artists. In fact, photos have many concepts that need to be mastered, for example about exposure, focus, lighting, lens focus, image resolution and so on,” he noted.

However, when asked about the evaluation of the work of photographers who exhibited their work at the SUPPOSES exhibition, Andy then answered that he had seen the works of the these four photographers here, to be honest, they are still related to their respective work. For example, here is a fashion photographer, it is clear that the results of his work are still influenced by his work as a fashion photographer, not authentic or separated from his own identity.

“So to get the attention of many people, to create interesting, clear, useful and authentic photographs, it is necessary to always remember when taking photos for public consumption,” Andy concluded. [traveltext.id]
