REOG from Ponorogo, East Java, traditional Kolintang musical instruments from North Sulawesi and traditional Kebaya clothing have been proposed by the Coordinating Ministry for Human Development and Culture to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as cultural heritage.
“There are three cultural heritages proposed by Indonesia that will be discussed in 2024. At present, we are still waiting for UNESCO’s decision. The first is Reog Ponorogo, the second is Kolintang, which is a joint proposal with musical instruments from Africa, and the third is Kebaya,” said the Deputy Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture for Cultural Promotion and Preservation, Andre Notohamijoyo, at a media meeting in Jakarta on Monday (05/6), 2024.
He explained that the Kebaya was submitted simultaneously (join nomination) with four other countries, namely Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei Darussalam and Thailand.
“Now, this joint nomination includes Reog and Kolintang. These three are currently Indonesia’s performance targets at UNESCO, we hope the decision will be made through the World Heritage Committee,” he said.
He explained that UNESCO would meet around August or September 2024. So currently the status of the application for Reog, Kolintang and Kebaya is still waiting for a decision at the meeting.
Previously, there were two Indonesian cultural heritages that were recognized and received certificates from UNESCO, namely the theme of preserving the philosophical axis area in Yogyakarta and the healthy culture of herbal medicine.
The first certificate for the designation of the Yogyakarta Philosophical Axis and its Historical Markers or The Cosmological Axis of Yogyakarta and its Historical Markers as a World Heritage Site was awarded on September 24, 2023 at the 45th session of the World Heritage Committee in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
