REGIONAL GOVTS SHOULD IMPLEMENT BGCE PROGRAM FOR SUSTAINABLE TOURISM

THE MINISTRY of Tourism and Creative Economy called on all regional governments to implement the Blue, Green, and Circular Economy (BGCE) program to realize quality and sustainable tourism in Indonesia.

“We encourage regional governments to also apply the principles (of Blue, Green, and Circular Economy) for sustainable tourism,” the ministry’s Deputy of Industry and Investment, Rizki Handayani, remarked here on Friday (10/18), 2024.

She highlighted the importance of regional governments managing the tourism sector based on the BGCE principles to create quality tourist destinations for economic sustainability.

“The BGCE program is not a short-term program but a long-term program. Therefore, it will be continued by the new government,” Handayani affirmed.

In general, she said, the BGCE program aims to reduce carbon emissions and preserve natural resources, culture, and local traditions.

Meanwhile, in the creative economy sector, development is carried out based on creativity and innovation as well as strengthening intellectual property.

“Currently, international markets have applied the sustainable aspects. Thus, if we do not move toward them, we will lose the tourist markets,” she emphasized.

To support quality tourism in the country, the government is committed to exploring best practices in conducting decarbonization and taking climate action in the tourism sector, as well as has a strong responsibility towards sustainability and climate resilience.

“This program will later be continued by the next government. To this end, we have invited all associations of tourism industries to oversee the BGCE program policy,” she remarked.

According to the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy, the BGCE encourages the implementation of environment awareness principles in business activities of the tourism sector and its supporting fields by continuing to prioritize the economic principles and benefits related to economic, social, and environmental aspects.
