NO INDONESIAN CITY AMONG TOP 10 TOURIST DESTINATION, DPR CRITIZES MINISTRY

ACCORDING to Euromonitor International, not a single city in Indonesia ranks among the top 10 tourist destinations in the world.

The Deputy Chairman of Commission VII of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR), Chusnunia Chalim, said the absence of Indonesian representatives in the world’s top 10 tourist cities should be used as a moment for stakeholders, especially the Ministry of Tourism (Kemenpar), to improve the tourism sector.

“This is a moment for all tourism policy makers to improve. Data from the global market research company Euromonitor International, which released the top 10 best cities in the world based on tourist arrivals, placed the Thai capital Bangkok as the champion. Bangkok is ranked first as the best tourist city in the world,” said Chusnunia, Wednesday (12/11), 2024.

She explained that data from the global market research company Euromonitor International, which released the top 10 best cities in the world based on tourist arrivals, placed the Thai capital Bangkok as the champion. Bangkok is ranked first as the best tourist city in the world.

Chusnunia praised Thailand’s strategy for attracting tourists to the land of the white elephant. Thailand, Bangkok, of course, can attract up to a million foreign tourists a month for a reason. They offer visa-free access and this is a major factor that makes this country very popular with tourists.

She added that in reality, the Indonesian government is not doing nothing. He commends the government for ratifying Presidential Regulation (Perpres) No. 95 of 2024 on visa-free visits. The Perpres states that Indonesia Reciprocal (reciprocal) visa-free visits are applied to 13 countries. According to Chusnunia, this Perpres is a great hope for the investment climate in Indonesia.

“We need to see the progress of this policy, what is the evaluation? If it is successful, of course we need to think about whether there will be more countries that can enjoy this policy,” she affirmed.

Chusnunia also criticized the limited budget conditions of the Ministry of Tourism. With these limitations, it will be difficult to achieve the foreign exchange target in 2024.

“The budget of the Ministry of Tourism is very small, how can it work optimally with a foreign exchange target of IDR30 trillion and also a tourist target of 7.4 million people this year. Of course, we have to improve ourselves to think of the best solution for Indonesian tourism,” he said.

Based on Euromonitor International research, Bangkok is the most visited by tourists with a visit rate of 32.4 million tourists. This is followed by Istanbul with 23 million tourists, London with 21.7 million tourists, Hong Kong with 20.5 million tourists, Mecca with 19.3 million tourists, Antalya with 19.3 million tourists, Dubai with 18.2 million tourists and Macau with 18 million tourists.

Indonesia even had to lose to Malaysia, a related country, which is ranked 10th as a tourist city in the world. [antaranews/photo special]
